    Redirect blocking publishing article[edit]

Hello. I asked this question at the Teahouse, but I think I may have worded it wrong and was misunderstood. I have written a draft on special interests. I would like to publish the draft, but I can not because special interests is a redirect to special interest groups, and the redirect says it is there as the result of a merge and the page needs to stay to preserve the history, so I do not think it can be deleted. What is the best way to proceed here? -- NotCharizard 🗨 06:46, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Without any opinion on if the article is WP-good or not, have you considered naming it "Special interest (autism)"? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:00, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is a good idea, thank you! I was unsure of a way to disambiguate it with brackets (I was thinking "autistic trait" but was clearly overthinking it) -- NotCharizard 🗨 16:27, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can make a requested move. But it may be a good idea to discuss it first on Talk:special interest group, as you might be seen as "hijacking" the redirect. ColinFine (talk) 08:13, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to report a possible Wiki software bug[edit]

I'm editing an article entitled Canoe. For the last day or so, when I go to publish edits, I click on "Review edits" and I see a blue progress bar going back and forth but never stopping. So I've just given up and done direct publishing without reviewing, as I'm pretty sure I remember everything, now that I'm publishing more after smaller edits than I used to.

I first planned to mention it at the Village Pump in the Technical area, but there it said software bug messages should be done with something called Phabricator. So I clicked on that and got totally bewildered by what seemed endless red tape to write a simple messaage about the above situation. After spending 5 or 10 minutes trying to understand what to do, I suddenly remembered the Help Desk.

So I'm back to ask if someone would make a small edit, then try to publish it, and see if the same I described above happens. Assuming so, then notify a Wiki tekkie.

But I'd also like to understand if software bugs are really supposed to be reported in Phabricator (I hope not!) or can't we just come here to do it? Augnablik (talk) 10:01, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Augnablik It sounds as though your issue is with the visual editor which I rarely use, finding the source editor more reliable and functional. Do you get the same problem when previewing edits in the source editor? WP:VPT is indeed the correct Help location for technical issues. Someone (not usually the editor who raises the issue) will subsequently do the necessary reporting via Phabricator if they can confirm the bug is real and seen by several users. Don't be put off reporting bugs. Just make sure you give enough information that the experts are likely to be able to reproduce them. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:43, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Augnablik: Assuming you're using the "Visual" diff option, this has since been reported, see phab:T364635. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 19:27, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is the "Visual" diff option you mentioned, @Suffusion of Yellow, something different from just the Visual view — which I'm using? Augnablik (talk) 11:38, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
After you click Publish Changes -> Review your changes, you should see two buttons in the upper right corner. The one labeled "Visual" is broken for everyone, but should be fixed soon according to the linked task. The one labeled "Wikitext" should work now. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 17:48, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull, I could have sworn I replied to you a few days ago ... but apparently not, because I don't see that reply here. So I'll try again.
What I wanted to reply to your reply was that I don't use the Source Editor, so I can't say whether the same problem would come up for me there. Why I don't use it is that the coding is a little daunting for an editor at my level, though I'm getting increasingly comfortable with it while at the same time making my way through the huge amount of Wiki whatnot to get familiar with — rules, regulations, templates, etc.
But from what @Suffusion of Yellow said earlier today, maybe my issue has been solved. Augnablik (talk) 11:49, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How come all german flags has been converted to Nazi flags in this article ?

It shows the official flag of Germany at the time of the events 1935–1939. See Flag of Germany#Nazi Germany and World War II (1933–1945). That's the flag they represented. This is normal practice in the English Wikipedia. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:35, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to say because from 1933–1945 it was in fact the flag of Germany. You can also see that the Italian flag is the flag from that period and not the contemporary tricolor. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 18:38, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You claim it's all German flags in the article but the later years don't show the 1933–1945 flag for me and I can find no sign it has previously shown that flag for wrong years. PrimeHunter (talk)
I'm seeing what you are seeing as well. I don't see an issue here. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 18:49, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree there's no issue with the German flags. But the UK flags on that page are the "at sea" version of the Union Jack, with a 2:1 aspect ratio. The "on land" version with a 5:3 aspect ratio would be moer appropriate. I don't understand templates well enough to risk trying to correct it. Maproom (talk) 19:09, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please see Union_Jack#Specification and the reference in the "proportion" field of the infobox. The use the terms "normally" and "commonly" respectively, theree is no fixed ratio. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 20:35, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Readability - "Balkans" page[edit]

Hey team! On the page for "Balkans," section "definition and boundaries," subsection "criticism of the geographical definition," there's a paragraph which needs to be edited for clarity:

"Since the late 19th and early 20th-century literature is not known where is exactly the northern border between the peninsula and the continent, with an issue, whether the rivers are suitable for its definition. In the studies the Balkans' natural borders, especially the northern border, are often avoided to be addressed, considered as a "fastidious problem" by André Blanc in Geography of the Balkans (1965), while John Lampe and Marvin Jackman in Balkan Economic History (1971) noted that "modern geographers seem agreed in rejecting the old idea of a Balkan Peninsula". Another issue is the name because the Balkan Mountains which are mostly located in Northern Bulgaria are not dominating the region by length and area like the Dinaric Alps. An eventual Balkan peninsula can be considered a territory South of the Balkan Mountains, with a possible name "Greek-Albanian Peninsula." "

I am not an experienced wiki editor, and in some places I'm not sure what the writer meant anyways, so I wouldn't feel confident making suggested edits. I hope this is the right place to raise the flag! 2003:D4:6F0B:1E00:7C52:48AB:A714:889B (talk) 23:59, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Prospective editors of the article Balkans are told "This page is semi-protected so that only autoconfirmed users can edit it. If you need help getting started with editing, please visit the Teahouse." Well, kind of: that suggestion is about editing in general, not about editing the article Balkans in particular. So what about this particular article? The orthodox suggestion is to ask at the article's talk page; and therefore Talk:Balkans. But in my experience complaints, however justified, about obscurity rarely lead to improvements. I've fiddled with the article. I hope that it's slightly less obscure now. However, it remains obscure (and, I suspect, unnecessarily wordy). Perhaps one or two other editors here would care to take a look. -- Hoary (talk) 01:32, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The best course is to consult the sources that are cited in the references. Since the sources are published, one can normally expect that they've been copyedited and are lucid. (The effusions of Professor Žižek, quoted at some length later, are among the conspicuous exceptions.) The obscure passage you ask about is, or says it is, based on sources in Croatian. That's entirely legitimate, but unfortunately not so many editors here can read Croatian. -- Hoary (talk) 03:32, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

HOW DO I GET MY PERSONAL PROFILE TO BE LISTED ON WIKIPEDIA[edit]

    Hi!

I am interested in uploading my personal profile on Wikipedia. Please advise me on how I can get started in achieving such objective? Thank you. Raphosystemtronix (talk) 03:18, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You don't. This is an encylopedia, not social media. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 03:19, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Raphosystemtronix Wikipedia has a policy that only topics which are wikinotable are included and autobiography is frowned on for reasons described at that link. Notable people who have articles must meet the criteria at WP:NBIO or the article about them may be nominated for deletion. We also have very strict sourcing requirements for biographies of living people. On the other hand, every Wikipedia editor with an account can use their UserPage to tell others here a bit about their intentions and interests. See WP:UPYES. Your userpage could be created if you clicked on the currently red link to your username. More important, though, is to make some contributions to existing articles. Contribution are deleted without history record[edit]

    Hi everyone,

I want to asked if someone experent too that he \ she wrote a contribution to wiki and it was deleted without any history record?

Like a big bag with wiki contribution. I don't want to said that a manger nor someone strong use is ability but would like to know if someone has the power to delete a contribution with no record?

It had happen to me several time with contribution that have done to the Hebrew wiki. Special wikibook.

Unlike it, when I wrote something at Hebrew wikipedia, that I think at most wiki, might be delete - I do have history record...

Many thanks and apologize if I wouldn't respond,

    יוני2023 (talk) 06:32, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, this is the English Wikipedia, we don't have any answers about how things work on the Hebrew Wikipedia, but if I understand you correctly it sounds like an edit may have been revision deleted or perhaps supressed. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 07:13, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Assuming this is about hewiki, where the OP is indefinitely blocked, they appear to have two revision-deleted edits in January and an unknown number of edits to their deleted userpage he:משתמש:יוני2023 (with 5 deleted edits total). I suspect its the latter, because deleted contributions like these don't realy show up anywhere accessible to non-admins (you can get the count of these from xtools, and make a few guesses based upon the page creations reported, but thats about it) Victor Schmidt (talk) 08:00, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Possible to edit our published edits?[edit]

Isn't there a way to edit an edit we published, especially a new one? Augnablik (talk) 06:49, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can edit the text that you added or edited, in the same way that you made the origimal edit. You can't edit the edit summary . If you feel that the edit summary you left was inadquate, you can make a "null edit" to the article (e.g. add a space somewhefre that it'll have no effect), and leave an edit summary for that, explaining what you've done. Maproom (talk) 07:03, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So, in other words, I can’t go to my User Contributions and click on the one I want to change — right, @Maproom? Augnablik (talk) 07:27, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Augnablik Only in the sense that your contributions list will remind you what you did and provide a link to the page/section where you made an edit that might need your attention. Any individual edit summary you see can't be altered. See WP:EDITSUMMARY. Note that one way forward can be to undo your own edit, so in effect you can start again. Mike Turnbull (talk) 08:16, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I can undo an edit? That’s good news! Wish I’d known before I followed up on @Maproom‘s suggestion of a null edit, which I did — asking whichever senior editor ended up handling my null edit not to do what I’d requested and just let me undo the edit.
Now I ’m wishing for a way to nullify my null edit. Augnablik (talk) 09:54, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    ANeed help[edit]

I have noticed that one of your article has missed the name of the musician who played with Michael Wadada. Is by any chance you can add the name on that list? Glenbuckarts (talk) 07:09, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For subjects that do not have a Wikipedia article, those articles will eventually get written some day if they meet the Wikipedia notability guidelines, which are a minimum requirement for the article to exist (otherwise it may get deleted). Also just to let you know, Wikipedia is a volunteer project, and it is written by millions of different people out there ("anyone"), and not just a certain team or small group of people. It's in the name, wiki. You can edit and write articles yourself too! Though I'd read Help:Introduction first to get the hang of things here. — AP 499D25 (talk) 08:43, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We have no article on Michael Wadada (presumably yourself), which is why that 'wikilink' appears red, but we have 10 articles that mention you/him. Which one are you referring to?
If we knew, we could look at that article's references, and determine whether one of them justifies adding the 'missing' name, which you have not told us either. Collectively, we volunteer editors are quite good at what we do, but we are not mind readers. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 188.220.175.176 (talk) 09:02, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Script that mass-retargets redirects?[edit]

I am looking for a script or gadget or whatever tool that can change the target of a whole bunch of redirects en-masse. Does there exist such a thing?

Today I just finally completed the merging of six major list articles, into one list article. Doing so has garnered hundreds upon hundreds of double-redirects that need to be fixed. And honestly, man, it is going to be so tiresome going through and retargeting each and every one manually. I already spent heaps of effort doing the merging as well as the re-adapting of the table layouts to increase the efficiency of data presentation, keep the page size reasonable, etc.

I know I can just wait and let a bot fix all the double-redirects. But the issue is, if the page were to be split up into differently titled new separate pages (which I've got a discussion open on at the moment), I would now have to go and retarget all those hundreds of different redirects manually, the bot wouldn't automatically edit them as the target page is still valid and not a redirect. So I'm looking for some viable solution here, e.g. some semi-automated mass editing tool similar to Cat-a-lot. — AP 499D25 (talk) 07:35, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Uploading a privately taken photo[edit]

    Ausmithimpa (talk) 22:34, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you personally took the image, you can upload it to Commons(commons.wikimedia.org). New accounts cannot upload images to this Wikipedia directly. If you didn't personally take it, it would be easier if the photographer uploaded it; otherwise it's a bit harder as you would need to show that the image was released for anyone to use for any purpose with attribution. 331dot (talk) 22:45, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is a picture of breast milk considered adult content?[edit]

Considered adult content for what purpose? Breast milk has several. Depending on context, a picture of breast milk can certainly be seen as unnecessary. WP includes several pictures that can be considered "adult content". Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:21, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    I would suggest reading WP:CENSOR, I think that should awnser whatever your implicit question is. -- D'n'B-t -- 06:38, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't at all see how an image of a cup of a substance identified as breast milk is "adult content"(perhaps the OP could explain), and even if it were, Wikipedia is not censored. As to whether an image is necessary, that's another issue that depends on context. It's certainly reasonable on the breast milk article. 331dot (talk) 12:42, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
IP user, there are ways to avoid seeing images that may offend you; you can install software/adjust your settings on your end to block them, or you can take steps when using Wikipedia(though those require an account, see WP:NOSEE). 331dot (talk) 12:45, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And the content of this hypothetical cup can certainly be argued not to be "adult content". Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:22, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question on notability (crossposted from here, just in case)[edit]

When did gender/sexuality suddenly become such a notable trait to the point where being a certain gender/sexuality makes you more notable than someone of a different gender/sexuality? Especially if it's not the typical male/female thing you usually get. Like, maybe I don't get it 'cause I'm a straight white dude who's never been attacked for something like that but like big whoop? Why should anyone, regardless of where you stand on the issue, care THAT much over who someone decides to fuck? Like it just seems to me both sides, gender nonconforming types and the intolerant people railing against them need to take a step back and wonder if this is REALLY something to get THAT worked up over. Live your life, fuck whomever you wanna fuck and don't make it other people's problems, simple.

There are a lot of video games (particularly from the 90s and 2000s) where two video games exist with the same title, branding, cover art, and everything-- but with different developers, on different platforms. A notable example is Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent, a less notable one being Need for Speed: Undercover.

However, there doesn't seem to be a consensus on what should be done when these games are extremely different from one another. This happens most frequently with handheld games, where the versions across systems share practically nothing beyond top-level genre and theme. If a game exists on Game Boy Advance or Nintendo DS as well as home consoles, those two games likely have next to nothing in common.

I'd like to ask for guidance as to when a game should be separated into its own article, and when it should be included as a sub-section within a top-level article. While this may seem like it has a blanket answer, I do not believe it does, and I ask that you read my examples for my explanation of why. I'd appreciate rationale so I can apply these to future articles and edits. If I should not be separating these games into their own articles, I would like advice on how to better organize information about them in existing ones, as existing articles do this in many different ways and almost always end up mixing the information in with the main article body, leaving it hard to research specifically these other versions.

    Here are four examples:

Road Rash (Game Boy Color) came out in 2000 and uses the branding and theme of Road Rash (1994 video game) but the content is most similar to Road Rash II. The confusing part here is that it came out in 2000, shares a name with the 1994 game as well as Road Rash (1991 video game) but uses the content of neither. At present, the GBC version is described inline on the Road Rash II page, but little information is given and there is no reference to its relationship with the 1994 game. The 1994 game's article is already covering five other versions that share little with the GBC version, and I am concerned that introducing the GBC version into the mix would make for an overly long article that veers a bit off topic, while creating a nightmare in the Reception section. I believe Road Rash (GBC, 2000) should have its own article.

Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed is a 2000 racing game for PlayStation and Windows. The PS1 and PC versions are wholly different videogames that share a concept and soundtrack but little else. There is also a 2004 Game Boy Advance game by the same name, which is a translation of the PC version to the handheld. It is currently only mentioned in the article's infobox. I believe these three versions of the game should share an article.

However, in stark contrast to Porsche Unleashed, later Need for Speed games exist across multiple handhelds with completely different developers. Need for Speed: ProStreet was available on home consoles as well as Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable. The home console versions were developed by EA Black Box, while the DS and PSP games were each handed off to separate B-Teams that made completely different games. I am torn on whether these justify their own articles, but they do not make sense structurally within the existing article.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear is a multiplatform tactical shooter. There are significant differences between the PlayStation version and the others, but they are minor enough for WIkipedia's purposes that the PS1 version can coexist with the Dreamcast, PC and Mac ones. However, there is also a Game Boy Advance port. It is not mentioned in the body of the article at all and is a top-down game with wholly different content. It is a completely different game from the others, and I feel it warrants its own article. Similar conundrums exist for the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell games on GBA, which are side-scrolling action games.

Please let me know how I should proceed. I am going to begin working on a draft of the Game Boy Color version of Road Rash.

WikiProject Video games is a better place to ask about this: the editors there can give more specialized advice. Helpful Raccoon (talk) 04:14, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Assistance with Account Deletion[edit]

Hello, I’m trying to delete my Wikipedia account but haven’t been able to find the necessary steps on the Help pages. Could someone please assist me with this? I’ve checked the Username policy and Help pages, but I couldn’t find any information on account deletion. Any guidance on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. There is no means of deleting an account, as legally all edits must be attributable to someone. You may just stop using and abandon your account. A vanishing may also be an option, see WP:VANISH. 331dot (talk) 00:06, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't attempt the option of WP:VANISH, Knowledgeseeker1937. Your contributions to Wikipedia have been so (very, very) minor that making their author vanish would not be worth the time of the person who'd do this. If you'd like to contribute under a different username, feel free to do so. -- Hoary (talk) 01:58, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can simply rename your account to a random string of letters and numbers and ask for your talk page to be deleted, and remove all mentions of your username from talk pages throughout Wikipedia. Félix An (talk) 07:04, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
