Music

What about other music "scenes" in this city? Rock, county, gospel..there are others. Why only mention hip-hop? Postoak 03:31, 3 February 2007 (UTC) I don't know. The Houston Hip Hop scene is the one I consistently read about in music and news publications. The New Yorker article cited compares it to Seattle in the early 90's. Of all Houston artists, ZZ Top and Beyonce are the first that come to my mind. I think Houston Noise Bands could be integrated into the article, but not on the main Houston page. I'd save it for the culture article.

Government and politics in Houston

We should move some of Politics of Houston (maybe mayor and city council) back into the main article and reduce the crime paragraphs...or put the crime stuff in a subsection. Very little is sourced in Politics of Houston. What do you think? Postoak 21:44, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

I apologize for my confusion, I got reversed after seeing several items like this [1] and was trying to clear things up and I guess I missed one. When I saw the anon IP correcting [2], I hit the "undo" button after getting confused thinking they had re-added the ebonics-speak instead of catching a repair I had missed. Thanks for understanding, I've been trying to do cleanup and get this up to date with the recent happenings but it's difficult when you get some of the random IPs coming in doing bad things. I saw an IP, saw some ebonics-speak in the difference, and my brain kicked in and said "it's the same guy coming back with ebonics again." It didn't occur that I might have accidentally reverted the ebonics along with a bunch of other things when I was trying to do cleanup. I'm still new to a lot of this wiki stuff and learning.

Would you maybe be able to give some help on the Johnny Sutton article as well? There's an editor there named Brimba who's not looking very carefully at things and was part of a group edit warring with another anon IP, and now the page is locked down completely to a very stripped down version. An outside perspective might get Brimba to stop and look more closely, he seems to be assuming this other IP is actually me and that's not the case. The videos are important because while Quanell is claiming there was pushing and shoving, the videos don't show any, and the news reports based only on Quanell's word aren't reliable then. I agree it'd be nice to keep the size of the Joe Horn part down, which is why I have been trying to watch and remove people who are just inserting their opinions when I can. Yeah, I had known about Tom Lea the author but got into editing those articles when I found out about his father. I was in El Paso and bought a book about the city's history titled "Ringside Seat to a Revolution", about El Paso in the late 19th and early 20th century. It mentioned Tom Lea Sr. several times as the mayor for a term and that got me thinking.... is he related to the author? Sure enough..... I was surprised to discover that these articles didn't exist on Wikipedia. There is a funny bit in the "Ringside Seat" that says Tom Sr. was a cross-dresser. I have yet to work it into the article. Thanks for the barnstar. You think if I keep working on the Lea family articles they will adopt me? His son, Jim (James) lives in Houston. I am going to start the J.C. one soon, that guy did a lot. I think I had heard about Tom Lea's artwork before, but kind of forgot. But, how I got on the trail this time: I was watching The FBI Story, with James Stewart (which is not that great of movie), and then I wanted to correct some of the fact from fiction in the article, and in researching, I found a movie review over at time.com, and the review was two reviews in one article, with the second one being The Wonderful Country. So, of course I had to learn more.

I can't find where Alfred dead? I have a very limited budget, so I don't have any of those good accounts where you can get the good stuff. I have to just try to pull things off the general Internet, which makes it a lot harder. I just use Yahoo! and Google, but I think it is the way that I search that makes the difference, without any good account this can be very time consuming. Also, when I look for one piece of information it leads me to another tidbit. When I find a new tidbit, I then back track, and try to find another source. I use TIME a lot, the free part of the New York Times is good (I wish I had a full account there, they have some good info, and it goes back to about 1850. And, even though I might only use one source, I find at least three before it goes in. So, if I find one piece of info, I look for confirmation at two other sites. I also have a good nose for sniffing out the crap, and lastly I think I have a decent feel for what is true and what is bullshit. Like when I searched for "Tom Lea" on Yahoo!, first site is www.tomlea.net, second is the UTEP site, but the third one is www.tomlea.com. This last site is a scam site. They have taken text from another site and just pasted it in, then when you surf there they hit you with pop-ups and adds. I went to the site and xxxporngirl popup came up. So, it is obvious some guy just rented a URL, then tries to suck you in for junk. These cheap copy+paste sites chap my butt. I also look for things that are wrong, if it smells funny, it most likely is. You can put something in an article here, say you put in that "Elvis had a special custom made toilet from American Standard". Then waited a month, you would find it repeated on a dozen sites, most without giving attribution and some not noting Wikipedia.

I am constantly surprised at how much source citing has changed with the internet. Most sources on wikipedia are just a link with a "last accessed" date. Many times it's just a title and publication, with no credit given to the author. A print article page reference is always preferable, if it exists, because the links for these online articles change, disappear, or require special access. This is true even for large publications like the New York Times, Houston Chronicle, etc. Deatonjr (talk) 14:45, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

My best research resource is the library. I was fortunate enough to live in Houston, TX, which has most of their reference databases online. So for free you can access tons of articles beyond what is normally available on the internet. Get a library card for your local city or county library, just to find out what databases they have available. Also most libraries will sell a membership for a modest annual fee if you are not a resident. The other option is to find a local university library. I follow the releases of university presses and the regional history section at the bookstore. The articles I wrote on Zenas Bliss and Edgar Odell Lovett were based on recently released biographies (and are still works in progress). I've also translated some articles from German. There are tons and tons of great articles on foreign language wikis that don't have english language articles. I like to run down the list of featured articles in German and find out which ones have no english equivalent. Finally, I follow ongoing stories in the local news. Quanell X and Joe Horn shooting controversy are two developing articles based on people in the Houston, TX area. Deatonjr (talk) 14:34, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

About the discouragement, I think that there is so much vandalism and crap on here that good editors react they way that guy did with me, just warning me without looking at exactly what I was doing. I wish it was a little (not much) harder to edit so that the good contributors could concentrate on making things better and not having to patrol for the garbage. Thanks again.

Tom Sr. was a cross-dresser? Or are you just talking about wearing the silk underwear? He wore silk underwear (they didn't make much mens back then) because he had a little health phobia, The Mayor's Silk Underwear He died with his silk undies on... " The Mex Files. So, it was more of a health thing after what his doctor told him (which was right by the way). But, if you have something more, we'll I had not heard about that.

Wikipedia Ambassador Program in Houston

Hi! I'm leaving you this message because you're listed as a Wikipedian from Houston. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program is currently looking for Campus Ambassadors from the Houston area, to help with Wikipedia assignments at Texas Southern University. Classes at TSU will be participating in the Public Policy Initiative for the Spring 2011 semester, and the role of Campus Ambassadors will be to provide face-to-face training and support for students on Wikipedia-related skills (how to edit articles, how to add references, etc.). This includes doing in-class presentations, running workshops and labs, possibly holding office hours, and in general providing in-person mentorship for students.

Prior Wikipedia skills are not required for the role, as training will be provided for all Campus Ambassadors (although, of course, being an experienced editor is a plus).

Proposed deletion of Sarah Turner Butler
