Mural[edit]

For quite some time there has been a street mural of his album cover, right on the street he spent most of his life on and mentioned in his songs. It's partially obscured here on google street view but there are plenty of photographs of it. Perhaps a thumbnail image of it+ caption could be included on the page if a legal photo can be found? Please help if this falls within policy.

Genres[edit]

'Underground' is a label easily applicable to the commercial success of the artist regardless of their content, so in a way he could be considered such. NPOV Language[edit]

This article needs to be checked for NPOV language. There are four instances of the word "amazing," to see some examples of such language. This "amazing rhymes and wicked metaphors" and "consistent in writting amazing lyrics and throwing amazing punchlines and has an amazing flow"[1] is not encyclopedic. If you don't like some of these "little policies," go hang out elsewhere. Subjective descriptions just don't cut it at WP. When someone goes to the 2Pac article, it shouldn't be a mishmash of over the top praise and hate, some debate between a couple of wannabe b-boys talking smack while they wait for their moms to pick them up from soccer practice. It doesn't matter how dope some random rap fan thinks his lyrics are- this is an encyclopedia, not a fan forum. I cleaned up this article as best as I could with what I had to work with. If some details are incorrectly restated then they should be corrected within the context of the new article by someone who has direct knowledge of Lamont Coleman. What needs to be added is something about his parents, his brother (hinted at) his religion, his schooling, etc., all of which must have had an influence on his life. Finally, there is a COPYRIGHT question here. The original editor included a number of lines from a recording. Who owns the copyright to them and does Wikipedia have the right to reproduce them? Yes, fair use does cover that but I was not sure if this was the entire lyric and I could not find any attribution. I don't think that this article should say that L's death was untimely. That's not to say that it wasn't, but that to say so would not be NPOV. Alternatively, having already said that he died at 24, you might say that his death was obviously untimely. We needn't state the obvious.

I don't think that there should be a brief biography section, unless there is also a detailed biography section to distinguish it from. Let's leave it to readers to work out that the section is short.

I think that, "When I'm lifted, I'm high," and, "With new clothes on, I'm fly," should not be separated from other elements of the list by commas, because they contain commas.

I think it should be noted that saying L was known for his freestly ability has no truth in it. At least not in the true context of the word 'freestyle'. The tracks labeled as freestyles, or radio performances called freestyles were actually written verses. This is fact, because I'm sure many of you have heard L spit the same 'freestyle' verse multiple times. It would be disrespectful to Lamont's memory to say that any of his recordings were sloppy enough to even be considered freestyles.


No, the verses were originally freestyles, he would keep a verse from a freestyle if he liked it and reuse it.

I don't know a whole lot about Big L, but this article seems very POV; for example: "Big L is also one of the more overlooked storytellers in rap." I think the discriptive words should be cleaned up by someone with a little more knowledge of the subject.

    • I'm assuming a lot of you never heard Big L spit a freestyle on the radio. I mean OK, he has reused rhymes before, and he has spit writtens on the radio... but that's not what he always did. Big L on Roc-a-Fella? think not![edit]

Big L had no intention to signing to roc-a-fella because he already had his own record label


Jay-Z has said that they were going to do the deal and that it was a week away from happening when Big L was shot. They respected each other and had worked together before, (Graveyard & 7 Minute Freestyle) not too sure how it works but i think L Would have been able to continue with his Flamboyant records as a footprint on Roc-a-fella, He probably would have been able to do his own thing and sign some artists to flamboyant, whilst being able to work with the likes of Jay-Z, Kanye West, Just Blaze etc for his albums as well as making appearances on other roc-a-fella albums. Personally I don't know if that would have actually worked out that well because Big L had a Raw/Underground sound, whilst Jay-Z has a more clear and commercial feel to his music.

Details of Big L's Murder[edit]

Can someone clean this section up? On one hand it says that his murder remains unsolved, yet then it says someone was found guilty and got 38 years. This is very unclear. I would think there should be online references somewhere. Bill shannon 22:23, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Still messed up[edit]

There's still a lot of confusion about this section. There are not any sources on this, and the theory posted right now, how he angered a gang in NY with his Ebonics song (I'm assuming), is the first I've ever heard of it. Nothing I read about his death seems to be consistent, because I've read a bunch of different things, like one, his brother shot him out of jealousy, and two, that his brother was in debt to a gang who ended up killing L accidentally. I've read that the investigation was unsolved, but I've also read that the guy WAS caught. I've tried looking for sources before to figure out what really happened, but there's way too many inconsistencies. I think the section should instead say that there is more confusion about the circumstances of his death than there is certainty, because it seems like people would rather edit the section and write in their own personal, uncited theory. "With the tragic slaying of New York rapper Big L, many of fans haven't been able to view the true side of him, after The Big Picture, loyal friends of the decreased rapper have went to the vault to find new unreleased tracks. His manager and partner in Flamboyant Entertainment, Rich King, talks about the album:

"We have remastered them to a quality that would seem like he was here today, it's going to be a two disc album with 24 tracks, ain't gonna be no huge list of appearances or remix of tracks, the only people who will be on the album will be the folks that Big L knew and loved, it's going to be what Big L wanted", the only confirmed producer DJ Premier, explained more about the album. "The title will be "Real Legends Never Die", we tried to have the album feel like Big L was really there, so it won't feel like we just put random tracks and that's it, it really has a Notorious B.I.G. Life After Death-feel to it, the three final tracks are, in my opinion, the most saddest and depressing tracks ever heard, a side that people never got to see from him.

The first single will be out in May and it's called "Do You See Me?", a track that represents Big L himself, a very powerful track. We are still working on a date for the album but I promise the fans of Lamont Coleman aka Big L, that it will be released in 2007."

POV problems[edit]

A whole lot a POV in this article. A few samples: "his critically acclaimed debut album" "kept perfecting his craft" "fast approaching the line that divides pastime and profession" "gave insight into fabled Harlem shootouts and legendary Harlem street life" "some of the best New York producers, deejays, and emcees on the mic, members came from several boroughs bringing to life the true sounds of New York hip-hop" "Astoundingly, all it took was" "and of course" "released worldwide at the summer of 2000 to critical acclaim" "exemplifies the gritty, punchline heavy battle raps" "Big L is the logical progression" "seemed poised to conquer mainstream rap" Etc.

There are also a lot of unsourced facts and possibly some copyright vios.

Death[edit]

This section is terrible there was a good one with sources a few months back maybe even '09, it had all the information about exactly how and where L was murdered (even the address of the building he was shot outside) and it had information concerning Gerard Woodley, and Big Lee's murder in 2000 which this article now erroneously dates as 2002. I don't know how to check page histories but I've seen them and this one should be reverted, if only because there are no sources, but seriously the quality is crap too. Lamont (99) Big Lee (03)[edit]

I think someone should include some info about the murder of Big L's older brother "Big Lee" who was in prison at the time of his death. Religion?[edit]

Big L was known for his dark lyrics and said that he was going to hell and that he worshipped Satan in the songs "Danger Zone" and "Devil's Son". People have told me that he was either a satanist or an atheist. Is this true, or were his dark lyrics just an act? This is obviously a joke from L. He was ofc no satanist, but he played like few other rappers with clishes and used elements of religious issues. Perhaps it is worth mentioning that the big l documentary titled 'Street Struck' will; be released on Big L's birthday (May 5) in 2010. This production has been highly anticipated and finally it is being released.
