WikiProject Java and Portal[edit]

I recently posted the following text on Wikipedia regarding the creation of a new computing-related project in Wikipedia:

'WikiProject Java is a Wikipedian community that aims to better organize information in articles related to the Java programming language and its platform.

  • If I'm cor-rec-to, there are about 900 articles on Java technology in Wikipedia, which may be more than ALL other programming languages articles combined...
  • At least, it's more than for C++, and there IS a C++ WikiProject...
  • And it's MUCH more than the .NET WikiProject with 82 articles...
  • There is also a Python project and a Ruby project so...
  • Now you can also see a proposal for the Java Portal (temp location).'

Please support this initiative, AlainR345TechnoWikiGeek 08:34, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Andrew, and thanks for your involvment in this project. I see you edited Wikipedia:WikiProject_Java/List_of_articles and that's certainly welcomed. But I would suspect you could be qualified to do more interesting edits. If you take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Java/Things_you_can_do, you've got a good idea of where we are right now, as a fairly new project: for instance, Intelligentsium has polished the Portal:Java I created last year, and VK is addressing the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Java/List_of_articles_uncategorized issue; I'm currently trying to fix problems reported in the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Java/Cleanup_listing.
If you've got Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser privileges, the Java BIGTOP tagging operation would be ideal for you. If not, I would suggest you begin with Wikipedia:WikiProject_Java/New_articles: there are 2 things to do: a) evaluate the suggestions given by AlexNewArtBot as for new Java articles; for instance I would say Aspire and ESP are no good (as far as Java is concerned) and the others could be; and b) therefore you plunge into SchemaCrawler, ZooKeeper, maybe Ehcp plus the Currents (MSA, Roo, TopBT) and try to fix them to some sort of Wikipedia 'norm' (that is, check their Category:, correct mistakes, add sufficient 'meat', divide into sections, research references, etc. and last but not least put the {{Portal|Java|Wave.svg}} tag in the ==See also== section and the {{WikiProject_Java}} banner in their talk page). Either way, please put your (ADK,ongoing) initials in place of the relevant (PYNHAGFIP) in Things_you_can_do. Our aim is to fix all those little issues first and then we will be on a cruising course, doing what all other projects do these days I guess, which is to improve the quality rating of the project's articles (as reported here). Don't hesitate to ask any question below this text... --AlainR345Techno-Wiki-Geek 00:43, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'm going to look at both Existing Java-categorized articles and New Java-categorized articles and see what I can do, and I added my initials to the list. I think I could also be useful trying to fix some of the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Java/Cleanup_listing problems as well. The articles in Wikipedia:WikiProject_Java/New_articles however are about subjects I don't really know anything about, so I'd rather leave them to someone else. Hope this is OK, and we should co-ordinate the cleanup list of articles so I don't start working on something someone else is working on, I guess? M3TA(info) @ 21:55, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, go for it! As far as cleanup is concerned, here's the deal:
  • WolterBot is slow to update, so the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Java/Cleanup_listing page is not totally current;
  • Before addressing the Java BIGTOP, I will be working on these articles: JAX-RS, Mobile_Information_Device_Profile, Erich_Gamma, TTCC, JavaServer_Pages, List_of_Java_keywords, Java_Transaction_API, Java_Metadata_Interface, Restlet, Java:_View_Technologies_and_Frameworks;
  • Also I did most of the sections below, the rest is fair game:
    Articles containing how-to sections
    Articles needing sections
Articles that include images for deletion
    Articles to be merged
    Articles with dead external links
    Articles with disputed statements
    Articles with minor POV problems
    Articles with obsolete information
    Articles with specifically-marked weasel-worded phrases
    Pages with incomplete DOI references
    Wikipedia articles needing clarification.
    Bye now, --AlainR345Techno-Wiki-Geek 00:49, 8 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK I'll leave you the List_of_Java_keywords since I see you began work on it today. But please go all the way so as to be able to remove the two warning tags. Thanks, --AlainR345Techno-Wiki-Geek 03:57, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again Andrew. I see you did some valuable work related to the Java Cleanup Listing issues; I therefore took the liberty of moving your initials on the to_do page from the New articles task. Now if WolterBot can raise from the dead..., we should soon see some fruit from what we do. Keep up the good work! --AlainR345Techno-Wiki-Geek 21:22, 27
Not sure where to ask about this, but if you look at how I've changed MIDlet you'll see I got rid of the huge chunk of Java code. I think, for instance Xlet ought to get the same treatment, we shouldn't just have code in an article, that belongs in a book or howto. At the moment I'm getting on with the cleanup of articles that require citations and references, but it's slow going. Also, s there a general discussion page for this project? M3TA(info) @ 07:06, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As far as code is concerned, I agree with you... up to a point. Looking at that Xlet article, I think the interface list would be 'bookish' (I'm not EN so pardon any crazy neologisms I could come up with...), while the example would be the one to keep. Is that your feeling? More generally speaking, you'll observe that there are Java articles with FAR more code than that and I think the difficulty in that eventual 'cleanup' would be to keep the worthwhile efforts of over-enthusiastic Wikipedians somewhere. Accessorily, there IS a Java Wikibook (however imperfect it is), the link of which is now at the end of the Java Portal. --AlainR345Techno-Wiki-Geek 19:02, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Obviously I missed Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Java M3TA(info) @ 07:17, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's valuable to group project discussions, especially as we are a young project that still tries to define how to go about things. However I realize with your comment that something I did was not clear enough. Thus observe the new Java Cafe link. Keep up the good work! --AlainR345Techno-Wiki-Geek 19:02, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I see you're into JME. So contrary to what I sais previously, I will leave you the 'Mobile Information Device Profile' article. Bye now, --AlainR345Techno-Wiki-Geek 00:41, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Small note: I'm not entirely sure how this works, but I think, since it is said 'This is an automatically generated cleanup listing', that your edits on page Wikipedia:WikiProject_Java/Cleanup_listing are not so valuable; the next time WolterBot goes on, they could be wiped out... If you absolutely want to document your Cleanup edits, I would suggest maybe the 'Done things' section of page Things you can do. --AlainR345Techno-Wiki-Geek 00:05, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

NowCommons: File:7166 Kennedy Animation.gif[edit]

File:7166 Kennedy Animation.gif is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:File:7166 Kennedy Animation.gif. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[File:7166 Kennedy Animation.gif]]. Note that this is an automated message to inform you about the move. This bot did not copy the image itself. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 15:56, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia book[edit]

Honestly, if it's a new book that hasn't itself been reviewed by anyone, I would say it should be deleted until such time as it is recognized by independent sources. I don't think it's enough to say that "Criticism of Wikipedia seems like an important subject." Thanks, NawlinWiki (talk) 17:55, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What constitutes 'sufficient' reviews, then? Would the author speaking at a relevant conference on the books subject not be relevant for notability? I'm not sure what harm it does to keep it there, now, since the article does now have references and link to reviews added, particularly given the caveat about academic book notability in the guidelines. M3TAinfo @ 18:04, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well, the conference hasn't happened yet and won't for almost 2 months. Further, that might indicate some notability for the author, but not necessarily for his book. And "it doesn't hurt anything" is not a good reason to avoid deletion -- I have to deal with that argument from dozens of high school kids. Obviously this is not the same kind of thing, but this is why we have to go by the guidelines regarding external sources. NawlinWiki (talk) 20:00, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Surely this is what a stub article is for, then? I have now tagged it as such, so why not leave it like that, and allow further refernces and citations to be added as and when they occur? This way, there is a place to add them, at least, right? I'm not trying to troll or anything here, I really want to contribute useful articles to Wikipedia, and this seems valid. M3TA(info) @ 20:14, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated Wikipedia - A New Community of Practice?, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Wikipedia - A New Community of Practice?. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. —KuyaBriBriTalk 23:16, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your concerns above indicate that deletion of this article is not uncontroversial and therefore no longer qualifies under the proposed deletion process. Its deletion has now been opened for community discussion. —KuyaBriBriTalk 23:18, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewing it[edit]

We'd love to have a review of this for the Signpost. I think Thespian isn't planning on doing this any more, so it's all yours. If you're definitely going to review it, I'll probably request a review copy for myself so that I can offer useful feedback once you have a draft ready. Let me know.--ragesoss (talk) 15:26, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

1. What, when and where is that March academic conference on Wikipedia where the author will speak? 2. Could you e-mail me (use the "E-mail this user" link on my talk page) about a review copy? Book reviews are one of the things I do on the side. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:10, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Nokia 5230.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Nokia 5230.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. 72.88.41.244 (talk) 01:48, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly unfree File:Get Out of Jail Free Card.jpg[edit]

A file that you uploaded or altered, File:Get Out of Jail Free Card.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files because its copyright status is unclear or disputed. If the file's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. You may find more information on the file description page. You are welcome to add comments to its entry at the discussion if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.

Fair use rationale for File:Wikipedia 9780754674337.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Wikipedia 9780754674337.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 17:35, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Wikipedia_9780754674337.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Wikipedia_9780754674337.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 12:13, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 19:46, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for File:Cloudsoft-monterey-management-console-screenshot.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Cloudsoft-monterey-management-console-screenshot.png. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 16:06, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:Cloudsoft-monterey-logo.png[edit]

I have tagged File:Cloudsoft-monterey-logo.png as {{orphaned fairuse}}. In order for the image to be kept at Wikipedia, it must be included in at least one article. Otherwise, it will be deleted in seven days. Melesse (talk) 06:20, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of minor planets articles[edit]

You need to notify the articles creator when nominating an article for deletion. I don't really understand your reasoning in the first place. Also, the user that created them has over 320,500 edits and, thus, presumably knows what they are doing. -- John Reaves 04:28, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I was trying to fix an issue with old pages still showing up in the category index for minor planet names. The lists of names are all in blocks of 500 for minor planets numbered under 10,000, so the pages for e.g. 5001-6000 that simply include the two pages for 5001-5500 and 5501-6000 are redundant and can be deleted. Additionally, for some reason the 3001-3500 block is split into groups of 100, which I had copied to the 3001-3500 page instead of the include directives, and then deleted the content from the 3001-3100 etc.pages to prevent duplication and confusion. I have notified User talk:Kwamikagami about this.  M3TAinfo (view) 04:54, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article Cloudsoft Monterey has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Doesn't meet WP:GNG or WP:NSOFT, only press releases exist

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
