Winter Park, CO vs. Alma, CO[edit]

As we have begun discussing on Extreme points of the United States, there is a argument over whether WP or Alma is the highest town in the US. Winter Park would be higher because of the recent annexing of Winter Park Resort into the town. The ski area goes all the way up to aprox 12,000ft. That clearly makes WP higher.

Alma CO is 1t 10,000 + feet - making it far higher than Winter Park. It is the highest point in the contenental US.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 198.133.100.133 (talk • contribs) 18:01, 22 August 2006. The Alma, Colorado and Winter Park, Colorado articles both make the claim that they are highest. Per the Winter Park article, it recently annexed a ski resort making it higher. It's not clear which is correct. But right now both articles claim each is the highest....Derek Balsam 23:55, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I'm still confused. The Town's website lists an altitude of 9,000 feet. Don't cities and towns have one official altitude, not a range as is now presented? If there is one official altitude, then that should be listed for the town. I do not, however, know where that is listed.RichWoodward 16:21, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The 'official altitude' of a town isn't quite so easy... Leadville, Colorado is either at 10,152 ft or 10,430 ft depending on who you ask. But neither of those altitudes match either the city hall or county courthouse benchmarks. The 10,152 number is historical and is close to the elevation of mainstreet. The 10,430 number was a marketing ploy when Alma started whining. :) They simply picked a new, higher point as the official elevation point for Leadville. Leadville once threatened to annex Mount Elbert, just to end this discussion once and for all. --Mdwyer 03:32, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for clarifying the confusion. It still seems to me that the 3,000 feet range in the current entry is a bit much. The range for Leadville is less than 300 feet.

Look everyone, Leadville and Winter Park are in two completely different categories. One's a city, one's a town. Leadville is the highest city, WP the highest town. No need for WP-Leadv debate.Darkshark0159 04:54, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
