> The 6412 is never really off anyhow. Turning it off just turns off the video and audio outputs. It continues to buffer TV.

Given how noisy the HDD is in my unit, I'm quite certain that turning it off DOES dump the TV buffers. Maybe this is specific to certains versions?

There is also a bug that demonstrates this:

- turn off the box - wait for it to turn itself on for a scheduled recording - start watching something else (you'll need to unmute the cable box) - when the recording completes, the cable box will turn itself off, dumping the buffer of whatever show you were watching

In my experience, the box' on/off functionality is the source of several "bugs":

Because the box needs to "turn on" for scheduled recording, the video & audio out become live. This risks blaring the stereo at 3am, so the audio is muted. This, in turn requires configuring cable box "mute" functionality on the remote, since on HT setups, the std mute button operates the receiver (preamp).

This isn't an encyclopedic entry. Shouldn't it go onto Wikibooks? - 211.30.184.38 10:51, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

No, it shouldn't. This page used to be very easy to use.

30 Second Skip[edit]

So is there no way at all to enable 30 second skip on insight receivers?

I purchased a Logitech Harmony 880 controller that offers a "advance" button that permits the 30 sec skip feature for blowing through commercials.

For the Standard Comcast remote: (Then select learn on the Harmony remote)

For the Motorola DCT6412 Comcast DRV remote you can program in a 30 second skip forward function: 1) Press the “Cable” button at the top of the remote to put it into Cable Box control mode. 2) Press and hold the “Setup” button until the “Cable” button blinks twice. 3) Type in the code 994. The “Cable” button will blink twice 4) Press (do not hold) the “Setup” button 5) Type in the code 00173 (for 30 second Skip) 6) Press whatever button you want to map the skip.

To restore the button: 1) Press the device key “Cable” button. 2) Press and hold the “Setup” button until the selected device button blinks twice. 3) Type in the code 994. The selected device button will blink twice. 4) Press the button you are restoring twice. The device button will blink twice if successful

Uncommanded hard drive reset - 3412[edit]

I had a new 3412 installed a couple of months ago - twice in ten days it has reset and wiped all recorded material and recording schedules - is this a known fault? Can it be triggered remotely by Comcast?

==[edit]

I do tech support for comcast and we can't remotely wipe your dvr's hard drive. If you find yourself missing saved programs try unpluging it from the power source for 30 seconds and then pluging it back in.

==[edit]

I don't see why it's not possible. There is a procedure in the Wikibook (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_to_use_a_Motorola_DVR/Resets) to wipe it, and I assume there would be a remote capability. That said, there have been MANY reports by users of the recordings and schedules being erased after a reboot since the 74.53 software and/or 16.xx firmware were rolled out. It's hard to say which is at fault as both are usually rolled out together. The current guess is an oversensitive fix for corruption issues that caused the 12/31/89 recording bug.
