Significance[edit]

What is significate about scutum in mytholgy and astrology.

None whatsoever. Astrology only uses signs, which only have a weak connection to the zodiacal constellations, but Scutum is not zodiacal. Said: Rursus 20:00, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sobieskii[edit]

I've seen this same constellation named "Scutum Sobieskii", for instance in the Observer's Book of Astronomy by Patrick Moore. That's a more direct translation of "Sobieski's Shield". Captain Pedant 20:25, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Me too. The name varied a lot before settling into IAU standard Scutum. ... said: Rursus (mbork³) 20:30, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Janina coat of arms[edit]

Janina coat of Hevelius' personally
arms drawn Scutum

The previous version told us that Scutum (by inference) refers to Janina coat of arms. No way! Observe to the right! The left image is Janina coat of arms, and the right image is what Johannes Hevelius himself drew. Hevelius' image contained a cross, but the coat of arms didn't. That's because John-3-Sobieskij was considered being the Christian shield against the Turks, and Hevelius' original image clearly indicates this. "Janina coat of arms" entering the article was just an unjustified jump-to-conclusions. ... said: Rursus (mbork³) 20:30, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Some indication of that saving Christianity was the motivation, is in Linda Hall's scan of Prodromus astronomiae, 1690, page 115, bottom of page:
Pro fide [faith] Christianorum militaverit [fought]
i.e. Hevelius' own words. ... said: Rursus (mbork³) 21:13, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

R-Scuti?[edit]

I'm not an astronomer, but from what I understand R-Scuti would be a notable enough star to mention in this page, being of the rare RV Tauri type. If anyone thinks it's worth adding, please do (I don't have the necessary expertise to do it myself without screwing it up). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.194.48.42 (talk) 20:15, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
