Untitled[edit]

Just confused as to whether this page is supposed to be of contemporary or historic railway companies? The current German railway is not the Bundesbahn but has been Deutsche Bahn since about 1992. Also ideally the Belgian railway should be SNCB/NMBS to reflect both languages. -- Arwel 00:30 May 7, 2003 (UTC)

In general I think lists of companies should include both current and past, because a) you don't have to edit every time a company goes under, and b) a reader looking for a company is going to have a hard time finding it in the list if he/she doesn't know that it disappeared or merged a couple years previously. I disagree. This has the potential to make the list impossibly large: there are hundreds and hundreds of former railway companies in Great Britain and Ireland alone. We should confine the list to currently operating railways (though there is no reason why, at the end of a country's entry, there cannot be a link to the likes of "Railway history of Xland" where such articles exist). Compare the United States solution in this list. If a former railway company is mentioned in the Wikipedia it should be directly findable in any case. -- Picapica 10:06, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My source of information is a book called "railways of the world" written in the 1970s, so some of the information may be a bit dated G-Man may 7th

A list of railway companies, or a list of railway acronyms?[edit]

This article is entitled List of railway companies. But for at least two countries (Germany and Switzerland) it seems to have become rather a list of railway acronyms. The actual name of the company is relegated to brackets after the acronym, as if it were just a bit of helpful explanation rather than the thing that is supposed to be being listed. Why?.

To avoid misunderstanding, I have no objection to using abbreviations where that is the genuine name of the company. But most German and Swiss railway companies have perfectly good names.

US Railways - Which companies should be included?[edit]

We currently have all of the Class I RRs listed, and one Class III. Should we keep this list to just the Class I's (the largest), or add in the Class II and III's? The latter choice would be a long list. I suggest keeping this listing just for Class I, and using the 'See also' template to link to other lists. Caseyjonz (talk) 01:55, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"Railway Unions" belongs elsewhere[edit]

Why does the listing of railway unions preface the African section? There is nothing comparable for the other continents. Railway Unions worldwide may merit a comprehensive Wiki article, and indeed there already are standalone articles on such in several different countries. Labeling[edit]

Should we be writing Railway or Railroad and I’ve seen some that have (Made up) “Train Railway” and then under it “Train Railroad”. This also happened with saying “Company” after it.
