Quadriplegic?[edit]

Is he really quadriplegic if he was left with the use of his arms? I was under the impression quadrapaligia leaves one entirely paralyzed (with minimal movement acquired through intense rehabilitation). Perhaps he is really parapaligic?—Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.160.115.234 (talkcontribs) 18:51, April 9, 2005

Hi, thanks for the comments. I am absolutely unqualified to say! I do know that Chesnutt seems to refer to himself as being a quadriplegic [1]. If that's how he describes himself, then I doubt we should challenge it. Let me know what you think. Christianjb 04:12, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I wondered this too. In concert one can sometimes see he has only partial use of his arms and hands. He strums with a pick attached to a wristguard, and seems to have intermittent control. In the film Speed Racer, his mother recounts his learning to strum and finger chords through force of will. So I believe that's what's up with that.

From the Pope himself! Vic emailed me to say:
oh yeah, one more tweak to my wikipedia bio, i'm a quadriplegic not paraplegic musician.

Hi. As I understand it, being quadraplegic means having severely reduced mobility in all four limbs, not necessarily total paralysis. So quadriplegic would seem correct here.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.254.232.125 (talkcontribs) 06:06, January 28, 2006
See above. He describes himself as quadriplegic. I'm not a medical expert- but I assume he knows what his condition is. I don't want this page to give offense by attempting to diagnose his condition for him!—Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.175.19.122 (talkcontribs) 16:27, June 13, 2006
He would have had an 'incomplete' C injury (he damaged his spine in the Cerv region). No two people with spinal injuries are alike and it depends on where the cord is damaged.
Can we please stick with person-first language: musician with quadraplegia, not quadraplegic musician. Identity should include positives before stigmatised negatives. Lemon Pickets (talk) 22:49, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Professional review suggestion[edit]

As an editor at Crawdaddy!, and to comply with COI guidelines, I am not posting the link to this review of Vic Chesnutt, Elf Power and the Amorphous Strums' Dark Developments. However, I would like to recommend it on its merits, and hope that an editor will find the time to examine the review and—if he or she sees fit—post it to the professional reviews section once a Dark Developments page is created. I appreciate your time. Crawdaddy! (favorable) [2]

Death (suicide)[edit]

Spinner reports him as having died tonight, 25 December 2009, after several hours in a coma. Article is here: http://www.spinner.com/2009/12/25/vic-chesnutt-dead . It appears to be suicide. 69.136.123.236 (talk) 07:35, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unreliable as it cites the source as the Examiner. "This was reported by a person working for examiner.com, an unrelated web site that is notorious for a lack of editorial oversight and, in some cases, a failure to maintain journalistic standards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Examiner.com discusses them more). The writer didn't cite any sources (just "according to reports"), and other sites that originally reported Mr. Chesnutt's passing have since removed their stories. In any event, I feel for Mr. Chesnutt and his loved ones, who must be suffering terribly." (from the comments on the linked article) --Russ is the sex (talk) 07:43, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Citation matters: Major media sources from Spinner to Billboard have now rescinded their announcement of Vic's passing; Brooklyn Vegan has [a good roundup] of the history of this, including screenshots of the now-rescinded death announcement from Billboard, and links to twitter accounts of those who are close enough to Vic to know. Kristen Hersh on her Twitter Page, http://www.twitter.com/kristenhersh said on December 24th 2009 that is was a suicide attempt —Preceding unsigned comment added by Imarcopolo (talkcontribs) 11:13, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Please read Wikipedia:TWITTER. As much as I enjoy Kristin Hersh's music, her twitter account is not a reliable source. --Omarcheeseboro (talk) 16:26, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Currently, this source says that " both Billboard and Athens Blur have removed their articles reporting Chesnutt's death" - they were premature & false. As there are no official statements, looks like he is still alive. This article needs an eye keeping on though until we find out the truth. Either way it's a tragedy. Thanks for the info. I do agree that this article should be closely watched to make sure others aren't adding properly sourced information. The Admins adding semi-protection and other editors involved seem to be taking care of that though.
It really isn't that big of a deal if we wait it out until reliable sources sort it out. If it turns out there's definitive news, I much rather be a little late on it than having false information.
Thanks. --Omarcheeseboro (talk) 17:24, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As an admin, I've been watching this. I'm not going to watch it going forward- drop a line on my talk page if intervention is needed. tedder (talk) 17:38, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As of 5:27 this evening, the New York Times is reporting that Chesnutt has died, citing a "spokesman for his family". Jfarber (talk) 22:57, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

() The current version refers to the NY Times article as a reference for Mr. Chesnutt's death as suicide. However, there is only a reference to his songs of suicide as far as I can see, so the wiki statement is presumptive and should be removed unless further valid references can be made. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.219.124.61 (talk) 02:30, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What "wiki statement" says it is a suicide? The current version of the Vic Chesnutt article says it is was an overdose of muscle relaxers, which is in sync with the NY Times reference.
Note that previous versions of the article wrongly included something about suicide, but that has since been removed, certainly by the time you posted your inquiry. Thanks --Omarcheeseboro (talk) 02:36, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
LA Times has a spokesperson for the family saying it was an intentional overdose. http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-vic-chesnutt26-2009dec26,0,4657766.story reprinted by the WP etc. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/12/26/AR2009122601693.html RIP. :( —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.44.58.49 (talk) 08:05, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If you link to that LA Times article now, it omits the word "intentional", although the Washington Post-hosted version does still have it. Rather than trying to be a tabloid website, WP should probably hold off and wait for something more definite. --Nickhh (talk) 00:14, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

His accident[edit]

I heard he had been driving drunk. Can anyone provide a reliable source that confirms that? 24.189.90.68 (talk) 01:00, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

See LA Times obit, linked to above. --Nickhh (talk) 00:17, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm cannot edit the page, but shouldn't the "paraplegic" word in the opening paragraph be turned to blue, going to Paraplegia. This would be an important internal link in my opinion and not many people are likely to know the meaning of the word. Just a suggestion.--Classic Clock (talk) 06:09, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good suggestion, I added the link. --Omarcheeseboro (talk) 09:59, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
