Lead Proposal: Include "Mask Video" Section[edit]

I think it would be appropriate to mention the mask video and its fallout in the lead. I recognize that this is detailed further within the article, but think its omission from the lead is incorrect. I think the incident has easily satisfied notability criteria. Given the time elapsed since the photo, I also think WP:RECENT is passed as well, considering effects from this are still being felt to this day.

Having read MOS:LEADBIO, I am considering simply being bold and just putting a brief section in the lead, but thought I would first leave my intentions and explanation here for a short while.

How about this:

  • In May 2017, Griffin posted a video online of her holding a mask styled to look like the severed head of U.S. President Donald Trump. As a result CNN fired her from its New Year's Eve broadcast with Anderson Cooper and her remaining 2017 tour dates were canceled by their respective venues. Griffin took down the video, and apologized publicly for uploading it. Subsequently, she was placed under a federal investigation by the Justice Department and on the No Fly List for two months.

I think this has been written in a neutral point of view (or at least as neutral as possible for an incident as controversial as this), but am totally open to suggestions for improvement. Due to all of the above reasoning, I feel this addition to the lead is worthy. Greg (talk) 00:41, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I would support a much trimmed down version per BLP/Undue. Gleeanon409 (talk) 01:49, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Gleeanon409, that seems fair. My reasoning for the some of length is as follows: I think the first sentence needs to be sufficiently nuanced to avoid confusion/incitement. Just writing "...holding the severed head..." in my opinion would be too brief. Perhaps you view this as overly accommodating?
I think mentioning that Griffin apologized and removed the photo is also necessary, but can shorten that a bit. As for the backlash, here I am a little unsure. I think we ought to mention that there was backlash, and quite strong. If I remove the CNN New year eve and tour date parts, but leave the Justice department and No Fly List part, do you think that would suffice? I think those two are notable enough to be in the Lead. So with these changes, it would now be:
  • In May 2017, Griffin posted a video online of her holding a mask styled to look like the severed head of U.S. President Donald Trump. After backlash, Griffin apologized and took down the video. Subsequently, she was placed under a federal investigation by the Justice Department and the No Fly List for two months. Greg (talk) 11:40, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't feel strongly about this issue, but I lean towards leaving specific mention of the incident out. I mean, hasn't she made multiple statements that have put her in hot water? I remember around the January 2019 Lincoln Memorial confrontation, she called for the 'doxing' of the students. So instead of mentioning every off-color thing she has said (she is kind of known for that) I would moreso just make note of her political activity and note that some of her actions have led to controversy. Really, I don't think she's 'known' for the mask incident, and especially in this day and age, 'celebrities' often make comments about the current president which might shock, so I do not think Kathy's mask was especially noteworthy. That's just me. ‡ Єl Cid of Valencia talk 12:03, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That’s a good point. Maybe

Griffin is known for some controversies including holding a mask stylized as Trump’s severed head in 2017 documented in A Hell of a Story (2019).

  • Hello again Gleeanon409 and hi El cid, el campeador! I've left this for about a month and no other editors have contributed, so I thought it's probably time to add something. Clearly both of you thought my initial suggestion was too long. So I've added the following (pretty much what Gleeanon proposed):

Griffin is also known for some controversies including holding a mask stylized as Donald Trump’s severed head in 2017, this was documented in A Hell of a Story (2019).

Kenny Griffin[edit]

While the article strongly indicates that Kenny Griffin has died, why doesn't it say so explicitly, one way or the other, like it did for Joyce Griffin dying in 2017 and Gary Griffin dying in 2014 ?98.149.97.245 (talk) 14:24, 26 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I added a line in the Personal life section. I’m not seeing the year or cause of death readily but maybe someone else can find it. He was estranged from the family and possibly homeless as well. Gleeanon409 (talk) 20:56, 26 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
