Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Old Norse, dates and subgroups)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a discussion about how to create a naming standard for Old Norse and its subgroups Old West Norse, Old East Norse, Old Gutnish, Old Icelandic, Old Norwegian and Old Swedish.

Which periods of time should be covered by the subgroups?

I think it would be appropriate if we tried discussing this at Talk:Old Norse language before setting up a Naming convention. My guess is that we don't want a naming conventio, because this matter isn't all that simple to generalize, and I'm not sure all scholars are agreeing in what terms to use and how.
It's better to check as to what the facts are before actually trying to decide on a naming convention. Peter Isotalo 13:32, Apr 18, 2005 (UTC)
It is exactly why it may not be evident that we should have some kind of convention IMHO. Moreover, by launching such a discussion we might attract more people. But as you wish.--Wiglaf 13:34, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Okay, it was a good idea but it seems rather unlikely that we'll attract any discussion here. Do you mind if I remove this from the list of naming conventions under consideration? - Haukur Þorgeirsson 18:41, 20 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Question: Norn (Orkneys), Faeroese? i.e. as sharing space in list with other Old Norse variants above - OK, they're both West Norse, or are they considered modern languages, like Modern Icelandic?
