Merger[edit]

As usual, I wait until I have to be running along to come around here. As quickly as I can, this appears to be yet another matter of confusing a legally constituted entity which has a legally defined boundary with its ZIP Code Tabulation Area. Whenever I bring up the matter of confusing the two in various discussions, I'm met with responses to the effect that it's a awful idea to try and define a community by its ZCTA rather than its actual corporate limits, even though many do anyway. We afford a gross amount of undue weight to the Unorganized Borough in relation to its functions simply because it's a legally constituted entity, even though it's a horrible means of geographically dividing Alaska, considering that it hopscotches across the entire state save for the northern two or three degrees of latitude. Anyway, in the course of my regular research about past figures in Alaskan political history, I came across this, which may provide background on why the two haven't been combined already. To makes matters even muddier, there's also Jakolof Bay, Alaska, a former CDP containing portions of the current Seldovia Village CDP. There's a clearer case for merging those two articles, especially if you're one who believes that Census Bureau geography is purely arbitrary. Also, my watchlist shows that @DJ Jones74: has been doing lots of work regarding past census etymologies, division and population counts, so I've pinged that editor in case they have any relevant knowledge to bring to this discussion. Hey, guys, I'm glad somebody noticed my work. I've spent the better part of the past year researching every named locale in Alaska that has reported on the census since 1880 and tried to relay that on Wikipedia where possible. It's been quite a challenge, since the census itself was erroneous with spelling names and didn't bother to locate explicitly where many places were (and as a result, are now lost to history). Many other villages have moved about (I was researching Shaktoolik this evening, which has been in at least 3 places under 5 different spelled names).

In any event, Seldovia and Seldovia Village are indeed two separate political entities. Seldovia is a duly incorporated city (since 1945) and occupies a relatively small geographical area. Seldovia Village, conversely, is a relatively new creation: It was created by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2000 to take in a much larger area outside the city of Seldovia, extending from Seldovia Bay eastward to Jakolof Bay. I consider it more of a successor to the former Jakolof Bay CDP, which was centered on that geographical entity, but had very few people (only 28 in 1990). The Census Bureau, in their infinite wisdom, decided to dissolve Jakolof Bay and presumably place its few residents within a newly-created Seldovia Village CDP, where most of its residents live just outside the city limits of Seldovia.

I think it was ill-advised for the bureau to call it "Seldovia Village" because of the confusion it creates with the city. It should've either been called Outer Seldovia or East Seldovia or something like "Sel-Jak." But we don't get a vote on the name. As far as I know, the city of Seldovia has not yet annexed Seldovia Village, and unless it happens within the next 2 years, it's likely to appear separately in 2020 and continue to perpetuate confusion unless the CB takes my above name change suggestion.

Anyway, I hope that helps and why that these two must remain separate entries until annexation or a name change occurs. DJ Jones74 (talk) 02:14, 7 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
