Lock article in run up to and aftermath of Scottish independence vote[edit]

As hard as it might be for people to imagine, the existence of the Outer Hebrides as fundamentally part of Scotland is about to become incredibly politicised due to the Scottish independence debate. I strongly advocate locking the article until well after the terms of separation are settled to avoid Wikipedia being used as a political football. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.36.57.163 (talk) 04:03, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox[edit]

Shouldn't template:infobox Scotland council area be used? The council area is named as the Gaelic form of "Western Isles", however it is the same area as the Outer Hebrides. Other Scottish island groupings use that infobox such as Shetland and Orkney. Rob984 (talk) 12:21, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

We have Comhairle nan Eilean Siar as a distinct article. The thing to do would be create Shetland and Orkney council articles. Ben MacDui 14:10, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Shetland has one: Shetland Islands Council.
Some areas have the council area infoboxes on the area's article, such as West Lothian, Dumfries and Galloway and Fife. It's only really cities which don't use the council area infobox.
As for the three island council areas, I'm not sure. Two out of the three areas have flags and coat of arms which represent the islands themselves, and not just the councils.
Rob984 (talk) 18:07, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I changed the infobox at Shetland, but left the flag and coat of arms. It isn't designed to have those symbols but it works OK. Rob984 (talk) 18:34, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. Ben MacDui 12:58, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Gaelic phonetic rendering[edit]

The transcription in IPA for Gaelic doesn't show a palatalized l. Eileanan should should different from ealanan. Can a Gaelic expert put the correct transcription in? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.75.20.116 (talk) 07:59, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bad redirect[edit]

A search for "western isles" is redirected here: but the term "western isles" is synonymous with "the Hebrides", inclusive of all the islands off Scotland's west coast, the inner as well as the outer Hebrides. It is itself a disambiguation, distinguishing the islands of the west coast from "the northern isles", ie Orkney and Shetland, off the north coast. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.187.172.25 (talk) 03:18, 23 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Author has confused the council with its territory[edit]

Na h-Eileanan Siar is the council area, legally changed last century (according to Wikipedia!). It should not redirect to its former name. Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is its governing council. Robin Patterson (talk) 10:45, 19 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Islands' names[edit]

I think it needs to be recognised that most of the names of the islands are of Norse origin, albeit rendered into Gaelic. Northern rock (talk) 14:42, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
