  • AutodialerAutodialler Misspelling. Autodialler should subsequently be moved to Autodialer (or should I just cut&paste?). Traal 06:13, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
    • Whatever you do, do not cut and paste a move. Ask an administrator, or ask here, or better still ask at Wikipedia:Requested moves. User:Jnc has now done it all for you. --Henrygb 13:34, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
    • Yup. Never, ever, move a page with a cut-and-paste move. Noel (talk) 13:44, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
      • I think you mean the other way around. The page should be on "Autodialler", surely? Chris 23:43, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
      • No, I checked, "dialer" is the correct (and most common) form. Noel (talk) 12:10, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)
        • I believe this is a case of U.S. vs. British spelling. Each spelling is acceptable someplace. Keep the redirect from one to the other. FreplySpang 05:20, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
        • Really? Hunh, I never would have guessed that one (and I spell things "colour", "harbour", etc so I'm well aware of this problem :-). Should it be moved back, or what? Noel (talk) 14:34, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
          • If the article uses British (correct ;)) English then put the article at the British English title and have the American spelling as a redirect, and vice versa. Thryduulf 14:43, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
        • I'm not so sure this is a US/UK thing. The ratio reported for the two uses (almost 70:1) is way off from other US/UK ratios - e.g. "77,000,000 for Harbor" vs "13,600,000 for Harbour", i.e. 6:1. So I think "dialer" is the way to go. Noel (talk) 16:57, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

"Autodialer" seems to be correct. Google (yes, yes, I know, it's not a dictionary, but it does give a good idea of usage) gives:

  • "Autodialer" - 147,000
  • "Autodialler" - 2,210

So it does seem to be "dialer". Noel (talk) 13:43, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I don't agree with the placing of this item under the spamming category. Though it could be used to place calls to people that don't assent to receiving them, many political operations use them to dial call lists consisting of people that have specifically asked to be called. It should also be noted that as a group using autodialers, the largest is churches using the systems for member notification.

Autodialer Restriction section - citation[edit]

I don't have the editing skills, nor the desire to learn them for this section. The section needs citations to the law involved for " expressed written consent from consumers in order to receiving marketing and other solicitations over the phone"

Modems[edit]

Yes, it was back in the 1970s and 1980s a sales feature of new fancy modems that they had things called "auto diallers" that allowed them to (gasp!) make calls themselves instead of requiring them to be dialled using a telephone to which the modem was attached. That is not the same thing as this and it is already covered in the modem article, except not by that specific marketing name. Jonathan de Boyne Pollard (talk) 11:15, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
