IP editors keep taking this out, eg here. While labels can be contentious and/or meaningless, I don't see that this one is; rather it is an informative description of his political position and background. It is how he is regularly described and self-identifies, and including it at the outset explains a pretty basic fact about him to any reader straightaway. I think it helps the reader, which should be our highest priority. As recently as last week, Boot described himself as a former "smart-alecky young conservative" who isn't as young as he was when he attended college and who has "had [his] consciousness raised", and wrote that he "remain[s] a classical liberal". It certainly helped me. I came here pretty unaware of him, and was left none the wiser from the lead as to where he stood in terms of US politics. "Conservative" is a broad label, but precisely because of that it narrows things down a bit without doing so too much. Pretty nonsensical to leave out "conservative" from the lede - according to his own biography "He was a senior foreign policy adviser to John McCain’s presidential campaign in 2007–08, Mitt Romney’s campaign in 2011–12, and Marco Rubio’s campaign in 2015-2016." and his new book is "The Corrosion of Conservatism: Why I Left the Right" link. This guy Boot is hardly a "conservative," and a far more accurate description of his Weltbild would be that he is a Trump-hater now who at one time in the distant past held some conservative positions. Wikipedia is very well established as a pro-Left source, and it just underscores the essential political bias of Wikipedia to have an article pretending that Boot is a "conservative" in order to invigorate his critique of Trump. Boot was never a genuine conservative, of course. He seems really to be a person with a MA in military history who favors war, and that is consistent with another part of his biography -- id est, that he has never personally been to war as a soldier.
This article is extremely promotional for Boot's career from the personal website link to the inset box with videos of him talking. Needs work to have a neutral point of view. Nweil (talk) 22:35, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
