Clean Up[edit]

This page is a mess, loads of artists with only a minor dub affiliation (Sublime, Santogold, trentemoller). Surely this page should be a list of dub-centric artists, not artists from the hip-hop, rock and electronic fields who merely occasionally borrow elements? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Salicouscrumb (talk • contribs) 06:53, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The above comment is fair enough, although I think it is the definition of dub in music that needs clearing up more so. Dub - meaning, as mentioned in the article, the process of creating the music through remixing in a particular style or Dub - meaning that which is played or sounds in/of a particular style; to which then the artist/group doesn't then neccessarily have to have built up the music from samples/remixing, i.e. the dub style of many of Ozric Tentacles' songs and song sections (and for that matter the lack of mention of inclusion of them).

If it is to cover both of the aforementioned aspects, then the only real mess in the article is the mixing of listed bands as being dub, but with no distiction between what the style of dub is, either in terms of dub like structure/sound, what the overall style of the group/artist may be or whether the group is dub-centric, dub-orbital or dub-dippers and of which meaning of the word dub (as to whether it refers to style of sound, creation, the specific inclusion of both or a mix of aspects. I don't think there is any confusion at all - surely the expectation when looking at the page "dub artists" is "artists within the genre of dub music" and not "artists who may have used some techniques inspired or pioneered by dub reggae". The latter would be completely meaningless, as it would end up including every modern electronic artist. "List of dub artists" is a page linked to from "Dub Music" and the expectation is that it provides a list of musicians which worked mostly, if not entirely, within that style. Therefore artists like Roots Manuva or Gorillaz don't belong in this list, whereas Augustus Pablo, Panda Dub do. The real issue is what percentage of dub is enough to qualify an artist as "dub artist". Grace Jones is in the list - she has enlisted Sly & Robbie, two dub artists, to produce an album which has strong dub elements but is not dub, except for one song. Is that enough? What about Steel Pulse or Sublime? They are reggae artists who also issued dub versions of their music, but they outsourced those to other producers. Can they be considered "dub artist"?
