ZIP Code 60203[edit]

The 60203 Zip code is served by the Evanston Post office, but is entirely within skokie proper. I live in 60203 so I know what I'm talking about. If you search for 60203 on mapquest etc. It will appear as Evanston, but it is in skokie. Source of the name "Skokie"[edit]

It's likely that the source of the name "Skokie" was Skoki, Poland, which was home to a Jewish community prior to WWII. I'd like to find an external reference or indication of this. The history section of the city's offical website ([2]) says nothing in regard to why the name "Skokie" was chosen. Rmisiak 06:44, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That's a good guess, but the relation to the Polish town is purely coincidence. The origin of the word Skokie is from the Potawatomi Indian word for "big swamp", as most of Skokie used to be submerged in a murky swamp. Can we remove this line: 'Another theory is that the name of Skokie originated from a word in the Potawatomi language meaning "Big Swamp".'? In response to ILike2BeAnonymous' comment on his edit: "I'm assuming the quote ends here, since you edited it; no need for synonym for name, and no caps as it isn't a proper name." I only moved the alternative, synonymous translation to accommodate the author who thought it necessary to include it, but I tried to do so in a more concise, streamlined way. Since "great marsh" is in lowercase, I agree that it would be inconsistent to have "Big Swamp" capitalized; moreover, it seems logical to have the translation of the word itself be lowercase. However, given the fact that it is a translation of a place name, it should by all rights be capitalized as it is therefore a proper noun. Nevertheless, since this is a minor issue and still technically correct as is, there is no need to pursue the matter any further unless someone feels strongly about the issue.Montblanc2000 23:28, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The only problem being, is that quote correct? In the version I edited, it was impossible to tell exactly where the quote ended, going by the way it was punctuated. I took my best guess. I too live in Skokie. I remeber reading in a publication put out by the village that they were going to vote on a new name. Ridgeview and Oakton seemed like likely winners. then the name of Cicero Ave was changed to Skokie Blvd, and "Skokie" won the vote. I don't remeber where I saw this. Skokie and Posen were founded by Polish immigrants (mostly farmers) from northern Greatpoland (Wielkopolska) after the liquidation of serfdom in 1848, and must be older than 1890 and 1920 (founded between 1849 and 1890). Just because someone does not know about it and make the most basic linguistic analysis, it does not mean that is true. Germans and Jews are not important in this case. World's Largest Village[edit]

Holocaust survivor population[edit]

I've heard it asserted many times that "Skokie has the largest population of Holocaust survivors in the U.S.". Dunno whether that's supposed to mean by percentage or total numbers. (Plus, as the article points out, this may no longer be true even if it once was.) Anyone else have any certain knowledge of this? --ILike2BeAnonymous 08:29, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

At one time, it probably had amongst the highest percentages of Holocaust survivors of any municipality in the U.S., although I would guess there were municipalities in New York and New Jersey which would have had an equally high percentage, as well as then-unincorporated West Hollywood,West Virgina . In terms of sheer numbers, New York City assuredly had more. With the decline in the Jewish population in the Chicago metropolitan area, and the dying-off of Holocaust survivors (particularly those who were adults at the time of the Shoah) I would think that Skokie no longer has the highest percentage of Holocaust survivors and that somewhere in South Florida probably has that title now. "Illinois Nazis" is a term from the BLUES BROTHERS MOVIE. I did not think that a supposedly serious article should refer to the NSPA that way, but some people on Wikipedia who certainly know much less about the subject than I do, disagree. I am not going to fight them. Sometimes I succumb to the impulse to do a good deed by fixing something on Wikipedia, but it doesn't seem to be worth it.
