Sixteen People in Total[edit]

The page originally read "It can be used to communicate with up to sixteen other people", but this is simply not true. It implies that a total of seventeen people (16 and yourself) can communicate in a chat room at once. I've changed it to fifteen. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.51.118.163 (talk) 02:36, 3 February 2008 (UTC) I changed it to be worded differently, so no incorrect implication are implied. Fun stuff[edit]

Why is the 'fun stuff' all the way in WikiBooks? --IRbaboon 14:29, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

  • It was copied there after being removed from here in this edit. The resultant wikibook makes no attempt at genuinely being either instructional or educational, and Wikibooks editors have rightly pointed out that most of it appears to have been made up firsthand. It is now listed for deletion. Uncle G 16:19, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm really surprised this entry doesn't mention the certain part of the male anatomy that most people end up drawing in their first PictoChat session.  :) --PatrickD 22:30, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • XD

Though it is true that about 80% of pictochatters draw... that part, It really doesn't fit in with the article. And yes, I realise that was a joke.--The last sheikah 11:40, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"PictoChat can also be used to determine the version of firmware installed on a DS." Perhaps somebody should explain where to find this? I've never seen it. Scorchsaber 15:21, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Find info on the PictoChat firmware versioning here or here.

Pictoquest[edit]

I was wondering if Pictoquest is worth a small mention. For those that don't know, it is a joke RPG similar to Mornington Crescent (game) that has become well known on Gfaqs.--The last sheikah 08:43, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ad-hoc or internet[edit]

can pictochat only be used in ad-hoc connection mode? --Abdull 12:52, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reply from Brodmoran: Yes. It is a local wireless only app. It does not support Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brodmoran (talkcontribs) 13:51, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Controversy?[edit]

I know this is old news, but it is worth including the PictoChat controversy that said that Pedophiles could use the DS's pictochat feature to lure kids. We all know now that this is pure bulls*it. But i just though that this would be wiki material.

Masterhand10(Talk)(Contributions)

It wasn't controversy. It was a slow news day. Utils 21:28, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PictoChat at anime conventions and such.[edit]

I added that PictoChat is widely used at conventions. Then I realized this will probably be deletd as OR. Could I post a photo of a highly populated Pictochat to back my "claim?" I even shot a video of the phenomenon. This was from the past weekend's Otakon. Though I've seen it at EVERY convention I've attended since the DS debuted.

It's also popular at movies (before they start) and sports events. But I'm not sure how to prove that. Utils 21:27, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You can't prove it. Where I live (a small town with a population of ~7,000), ever since buying my DS in 2004, I've never run across anyone in Pictochat. I supposed at a con, it would be more common, but even at theaters and my school, I've never encountered anyone in Pictochat. --Piroteknix (talk) 01:07, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Japanese (kana only)[edit]

The bit about Japanese input being kana-only should be expanded. Is there a reason why it's kana-only? Even if you set the language to Japanese, you can't type kanji. According to the Japanese article, they have kana-only input too. Being a Japanese company, one would think the Japanese language input would be more complete, you know? --Piroteknix (talk) 01:24, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

They probably didn't include Kanji because there are thousands and thousands of them. Could you imagine scrolling through that many pages just to find one Kanji? It's much easier to just have kana. 71.251.101.100 (talk) 22:30, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It was due to a memory limitation in the DS firmware, I can't find a reference for that but I know this is the reason —Preceding unsigned comment added by UKWikiGuy (talkcontribs) 21:04, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That can't be the only reason. PictoChat is supposed to be a simple communication tool accessible to all ages. Piro, you do know how kanji works, right? Plenty of kids over there can't read it, that's what furigana is there for. With both phonetic alphabets installed, the DS is capable of writing any word or phrase in Japanese readable by anyone who knows the language. Regardless, there's still no source. --Coreycubed (talk) 15:22, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The reason why there's no kanji is because there is no real purpose to have it. There are at least 3000 kanji and most Japanese kids don't even know a third of them. Besides, imagine the method of imputing them and the amount of memory it would take (The DS has only 4 MB and it's SRAM!). You can write everything in Hiragana and Katakana anyways, and even including hiragana was generous, and it's not like someone's going to write a research report on their DS. -- penubag  (talk) 04:15, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"PAL regions" - something does not compute[edit]

Citing the article: "Swapnote (also known as Nintendo Letter Box in the PAL region) [...]"

There is no such thing as PAL on 3DS. Why reference PAL which has nothing to do with the software nor the system it is built for?Are1981 (talk) 22:49, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed split[edit]

I believe that PictoChat, with some sources and text added, could be an article itself. It is an important app also cited in other Nintendo games. Borteddd (talk) 23:10, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Split:Imo this article would benefit from a split like this. Pictochat takes up a lot of space here and is important enough for its own article. TheFallenMoon (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 15:26, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TheFallenMoon It really doesn't. By that logic, Wii U Chat and other services should have their own article. If the content needed an article, don't you think it would've existed already? SoyokoAnis - talk 08:50, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Split:There's enough information for it to have its own article and meets notability guidelines.Abobeck11 (talk) 15:11, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dead reference in need of replacing[edit]

I noticed reference 1:

https://www.nintendo.com.au/files/DS_Manuals/DSPictochatInstructionBooklet.pdf

is dead, and could be replaced with:

https://web.archive.org/web/20170315082401/http://www.nintendo.com.au/files/DS_Manuals/DSPictochatInstructionBooklet.pdf

However, I wasn't able to determine where this change should be made in the article. Under references, I simply see {{reflist}} and no further details. If somebody could update this reference I would greatly appreciate it. -- 173.20.216.139 (talk) 10:47, 29 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Radius of Message Receiving and Sending[edit]

The article says it has a radius of sending/receiving messages of 10 metres, or 33 feet, but tests have been done, showing it can receive and send messages from up to over 100 metres.
