Creation and order[edit]

There is an inconsistency with the numbering of the Earls. Articles exist on the 7th, 8th, and 9th; are they really the 6th, 7th, and 8th? Compare the list of Dunbars in the Earl of March article.

The Clan Cleary ([1]) seems to have done its research -- they used Clans and Tartans of Scotland and Burke's Peerage -- and I've changed the article accordingly. I'd link to it, but there are these damnable frames that pop up even if you enter the URL for a specific page; you'll have to search the site for "Dunbar" or "Gospatric" to find the information I used. Hmm, that's what happens when you use secondary (and tertiary, etc.) sources for this kind of stuff... thanks :-P ugen64 00:38, 23 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Gospatric, the first Earl of Northumberland, fled England for Scotland in 1072 after losing his title for ... But the Earl of Northumberland page has that title only from 1377. So which page is right?

They're both correct. Gospatric was a feudal earl of Northumberland, which is to say that his "earldom" was not a peerage. Mackensen (talk) 07:48, 23 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Northumbria, surely: Northumberland is a later county name?
