The coordinates of Macdonald Rock currently shown in our article are 30°09′S 178°22′W. According to Chart NZ 2225, its position is roughly 30°11.3′S 178°25.5′W, and it lies about 4 km directly north of Macauley Island. I'll update the article accordingly. -- Avenue 13:42, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This "rock" is clearly visible on Google Earth but looks rather like a submerged atoll or bank. I have discovered an other bank at -30 34 43.21 -178 32 04.49 near Curtis ! Is this place already named ? Otherwise I claim the right to name it ! stephane.jourdan gmail

First edition of this book published in 1957 by G Bell & Sons Ltd. Tells the story of the Bell family who settled on Raoul Island, in the Kermadec Islands. I think you missed some context. The sentence is "European settlers, initially the Bell family, lived on the islands from the early nineteenth century, growing food for the whalers, and remained until 1937." This doesn't say the Bell family was there over that period. The Te Ara link you gave does say "all left after the 1870 eruption", so there may have been a period of 1870-1878 when Raoul Island was unoccupied, but it's also possible that some returned later in 1870. Te Ara says "Raoul is the only island in the Kermadec group large enough to support settlement" but that doesn't establish that there were no unsuccessful attempts to settle other islands. Te Ara says the islands were deserted in 1917, apart from one escaped prisoner of war who was at least briefly on Curtis Island, so it is clear that there wasn't continuous settlement up to 1937.
