Not such a bad film considering the year in which it was made. Showman/producer Dino de Laurentiis promised a real-life, to scale 40-ft-plus robot gorilla, but the huge machine only showed up towards the end of the movie, looking stiff and lifeless as anyone could've possibly imagined. The venue in which the big ape was showcased was fashioned after N.Y.s Shea Stadium.

Still, there are some interesting special-effects in this remake of the 1933 original, yet some inferior ones show up as, say, bad chroma-key superimposition and (get this) Kong's to-the-death battle with a giant goofy-looking snake (looking more like a great big, lifeless, plastic 'boa'). Budget limitations for this 1976 film limited Kong's battle with only this snake and a few helicopters atop the now demolished World Trade Center.

Peter Jackson (LOTR) will direct the December 2005 remake. His version will take place in the 1930's, and he plans to remain more faithful to the original. The cast will include Adrien Brody, Naomi Watts and Jack Black.
