Cabbage Patch Kids[edit]

Cabbage Patch Kids were made by Coleco NOT Mattel. Why don't you get your facts straight!!

No need to get upset. It seems that the dolls were created by Xavier Roberts (Original Appalachian Artworks, Inc.) and later sold by Coleco and eventually Mattel, so I've reworded it. Hope it's OK. ~ Conbinibento 09:31, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The dolls were originally invented by a Kentucky artist named Martha Nelson Thomas. Martha first started making them in the early 70s, and would "adopt" them out to family and friends.

The dolls eventually caught the eye of Xavier Roberts, a Georgia man who ran a gift shop. After Martha denied him permission to sell her dolls, he stole the design and began making his own versions.

Xavier's dolls, which each had his signature printed on the ass, became wildly successful over the next few years. Their popularity reached its peak in 1983, when shortages of the dolls over the Christmas period led to mini-riots in toy stores across the country. Through all this, Martha didn't make a single penny from her creation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hmfree (talkcontribs) 14:16, 15 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Stub?[edit]

It looks like The Garbage Pail Kids Article is a stub?

Seems alright to me... 85.226.122.205 00:40, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Character articles[edit]

Character articles are being created and deleted. Maybe a good idea to list characters on this page. Potatoswatter 16:42, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Don't delete them, redirect them to this article. It would be fun to read an article about a GPK character. Of course they shouldn't actually be separate articles. A from L.A. (talk) 12:48, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The movie[edit]

I think the movie deserves it's own page. Right now you click the link and it redirects back here again, creating a loop. Obviously it had it's own page at one point. Lots of feature-length films have their own entries. WHy wouldn't the Garbage Pail Kids movie?--76.205.56.187 (talk) 03:37, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I completely agree.Falolizer (talk) 02:31, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I do not know about that. Maybe there should at least be more information about it on the article. Ian Fairchild (talk) 16:14, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Series breakdown[edit]

It would be great to breakdown character by Series. Or at least make mention of the fact that the cards were released as "series". Additionally, special "street cred" was given to those of us who own Series 1 cards like "April Showers".Jsarao (talk) 20:08, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A full breakdown of each series would turn into a nightmare. Plus, it would never fly with the admins of Wiki. The breakdown would be no more than an exhaustive list. Why recreate info here that the sites in the External links section have done a great job of doing for us? --Brownings (talk) 03:10, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Back of card[edit]

Need summary description of examples of things found on the backs of the cards.Jsarao (talk) 20:17, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Forbidden in Mexico?[edit]

I was just looking here at the Cabo San Luca airport page and it says in forbidden custom items Stamps, cards or wrapping paper (color or b/w) even on chewing gum, or candy packages with figures or drawings showing denigration messages to childhood, ridicule, violence related, self destruction, or any other sociopath behavior known as “Garbage Pail Kids” Anyone want to elaborate on that?[1]--70.75.210.1 (talk) 23:48, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Imitations[edit]

In the 1980s there were at least two imitations of Garbage Pail Kids being produced and sold in Los Angeles (and presumably elsewhere). One was a series of 36 or so stickers called Trash Can Tots that were sold as several stickers at a time in transparent plastic bubbles for 25 cents a bubble (those same kind of plastic "bubbles" that they used to sell slime in etc. for kids). At least I remember that they were sold like this. I still have all the Trash Can Tots that I bought as a kid, and according to a google search about 36 were produced. I don't have the entire series but I have a lot of them. I will soon scan them and begin the Trash Can Tots article. They should also be mentioned in this article along with other imitations. There was another series of imitations produced by others, I forgot what they were called but I have one sticker from that series in my garage somewhere, next to my almost complete collection of Garbage Pail Kids (not including the new series from this decade). A from L.A. (talk) 10:38, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Can you at least describe the sticker. I may be able to tell you the sticker series' name. I was once so obsessed with those cards, I knew a lot about them. Ian Fairchild (talk) 06:19, 1 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just found out about a card series released back in 1986 called Grossville High. It was a knock-off of GPK, as the name implied. Perhaps a list of spoofs of the GPK or card sets or stickers inspired by the GPK is in order. Ian Fairchild (talk) 17:24, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

School ban[edit]

It's a known fact that these cards were (and still are) banned at most schools. The problem is finding enough online sources that say so. Also, we'd like to know what degrees of punishment are imposed on those caught with these cards.

Also, a long time ago, I saw an official promo poster showing a kid literally getting booted out of school while holding a stack of GPK cards. I tried doing a search, but no leads. Anyone know where I can find it, as it would be ideal to post on this article. - Areaseven (talk) 05:07, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Addition of reference to book chase cards[edit]

A mention of the Garbage Paill Kids book's four chase cards in the inside back cover of the book should be included. All of the Abrams Books Topps trading card books had them and they're even mentioned on the front cover of the book's picture in the article.

Someone named Cassiopeia has removed this mention twice, even after I explained it to this person the second time around. Someone please inform this person that this is an actual thing and that it's still being done.Malcolmlucascollins (talk) 13:56, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Updating the article[edit]

Is it possible for someone to update the article in the sections Brand-New Series sets, 2014 Series 1 and Yearly themed sets? This is long since overdue.Malcolmlucascollins (talk) 02:29, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
