Review request

Hi :) If you have a few minutes it be great if you could have a look at West Papua and the re-name proposal at the bottom of its discussion page. Any input, edits, opinions, style be great. I've always tried to ensure there was an abundance of supporting evidence before adding content, and avoid emotive wording; I welcome different opinions, just wish they would explain what it is they disagree with. Otherspace and Able Baker AfD

Just as a general guideline, it's a bad idea to provide examples like this one, e.g. "You can't suggest that we delete X when we have Y". The result is often that people involved in the discussion will see it as an invitation to nominate the second article for deletion. And, if you've followed any discussions of MUDs on AfD, the outcome would be grim if you couldn't cite a source.

Which is partly why I decided to offer that example. I've been turned off Wikipedia because of it's tendency to delete articles which (for anyone familiar with said community) would be ridiculous. If I incite even more deletions, then I hope it will only further demonstrate the point that perhaps there is something wrong with the criteria in which articles are being deleted. If and when Otherspace is put up for AFD and I notice it, I'll go and put a comparison with yet another article which shouldn't be deleted (but which cannot be verified by sources except those that have been deemed invalid for... well no good reason in my opinion). After enough times I hope to get a policy change as I feel this is hurting Wikipedia much more then it is helping it. I specifically chose Otherspace because it is in the exact same boat as Able and Baker. --John Lynch 00:23, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

• Ahh, the poison pawn gambit. Just for the record, I have no problem with someone, anyone, attempting to re-shape the foundational structures of Wikipedia. It's simply that, as they currently exist, the policies and guidelines do pretty much exclude things that are only known to their respective communities.
• Your "notability is not requirement" argument is a very good one. Which is why, in my evilness, I've chosen not to argue that!
• If you do decide to immerse yourself in the whole deletion/inclusion madness, I'd look to users like Kappa and Encephalon. They are almost unfailingly polite, thoughtful, and as a result, respected. The rest of us are hysterical shrieking ninnies.

Invitation

There is a backstage pass coming up to be followed by an editathon in the State Library of New South Wales on 23 November. This is the first time that an Australian cultural institution has opened its doors to us in this way and will be a special opportunity because the Library is providing: one of its best rooms; its expert curators (along with their expertise and their white gloves); a newly launched website (containing new resources); and of course, items from its collection (including rare and usually unavailable material) which we can look at, learn from, and use, to improve WP articles. For example, on the chosen topic (Australia and WWI), the Library holds many diaries and manuscripts from the period.

As you can see from the Library's project page, they have connected this editathon with their own work. They have already set out a wide range of resources to make things easier for us.
