Fructose[edit]

With respect to fructose, I reverted it because what you put in was not so much an article on fructose as a POV essay on why fructose is bad for you. Please do not reinsert it. I have no opinion about the claim about the speed of metabolism compared to that of sucrose; if you check the history you will see that I did not write that, and have made only minor edits to the article. I really do not know how to approach this. Obesity is probably the most threatening "sickness" of our time. All international organizations WHO, various NIH departments osv stress the need to reduce sugar consumption globaly. Even your president has come around. While sucrose comsumption has gone back in the US, fructose consumption has increased dramatically through the use of HFCS (high fructose corn syrup. The total monosaccharide/disaccharide picture shows are large increase in sugar consumption, not a decrease. Fructose is a major energy source for many people today. Its metabolism and endocrinological effects are quite unlike glucose. Should an encyclopedia not give information about this? Take a look ath "obesity". There is much more information there than under fructose or glucose. You can at least let the link to medbio remain. Bob Horn

For a good review of the possible role of fructose in the obesity epidemic see "Consumption of high-fructose corn syrup in beverages may play a role in the epidemic of obesity", George S. Bray et al, Am J Clin Nutr 2004;79:537-43. I am not interested in playing a write-erase game but people should had access to good information about the food they eat and the risks they take. Read, think and come back to the quewstion of the fructose article. Bob Horn
