Artefact

Hey, just noticed you replaced "artefact" with "legacy" in Curry. I don't see what's wrong in using "artefact" to mean an inaccuracy borne out of chance and contrary to the the original/natural meaning (vide. OED 2nd Edn. 1989's entry on "artefact"). I'm not saying that "legacy" is wrong, but that it doesn't convey the meaning of inaccuracy that "artefact" does. Ambarish 07:40, 30 August 2005 (UTC)

I was looking at COD (2002 I think, don't have it to hand at work). It gave, as I recall, something man made (the sense in which archaeologists use it) and an error that arises from an experimental method (artefacts in a photomicrograph etc). (I hope an article on curry doesn't require usages found only in a larger dictionary.) The real problem is the idea that a loan word need necessarily have the same meaning in the borrowing language that it has in the donor language, and that if it doesn't then some kind of error or 'inaccuracy' has occurred. It is borrowed to fill a linguistic hole, and its meaning will be tuned according to the purposes of the borrowing language to fit that hole. i.e. a generic word was required for the relatively highly spiced Indian dishes which had no name in English and are now called curries; the word borrowed for this purpose may have meant sauce in Tamil, but the mismatch of meanings between the two languages is not an error or inaccuracy in either. This is why I also have a problem with calling it 'inaccurate'. It has a quite reasonably precise, if generic, meaning in English, which can in no way be beholden to its Tamil origin. Ok, regarding your message on my talk page. Yes, there are countless errors, inconsistancies, etc. in the PG catalog. For an email address to report them, see http://www.gutenberg.org/about/contact All new author headings and titles are added to the catlog automatically, which can create a lot of material to double check. Downend

I noticed that you edited the Downend page. I feel that the title of "Downend. Bristol" is wrongly implying that the town is part of Bristol, rather than South Glos. What do you think? Fullerov 17:36, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

• It wasn't so much the listing as a suburb of Bristol, as downend is definitely continous with Bristol. It was the title of Downend being Downend, Bristol in contrast to say Kingswood which is Kingswood, South Gloucestershire. I don't know how to change this Fullerov 21:40, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps you woudl go the extra mile and tell me what the county name is? I have been working from pages I have researched onliune. Since in most of the pics there is no notice concerning cpyrights, we can assume that there are not copyrighted. Instead, in order to be correct, I assumed that most of those are copyrighted and I gave sources and full explanation. Indeed, we need pics to enhance the article and the persoality of Alekos, the trial, his political action and the recognition of international community. The only pic that we can find explicitly a copright notice is the one in Plazzio Medici. Thankfully, the institute permits explicitly the use of all the info exposed in its sight for educational purposes (they even permit you to print them out via methodes of their own conception) provided a full sitation to the source is done. You can fnd the necessary info in the English version of their site (you can use the link I give). Please, do not hesitate to write me for any forther information you may require. Thank you very much for the image of St.Giles on the Imber page. Do you know any ex-Imberites? Salisbury is close by, as I recall. This article is close to me since I saw the BBC documentary on Imber. They should certainly be remembered, and the actual refugees (or children thereof) can best tell their tale. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL.
