Transition of Jerzy into Adminship[edit]

Adminship [nomination][edit]

I nominated you for adminship. Please go to WP:RFA and accept. I think you would make a great admin. Cheers, Jiang 06:50, 20 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Re Adminship Nomination[edit]

[By following the link Jiang left, i found the next sentence, which i struck out and fullfilled by appending the rest of this section. --Jerzy(t) 18:51, 2004 Sep 3 (UTC)]

Awaiting acceptance from Jerzy of nomination.
My goodness.
  • In favor, i will point out that it would save effort by the ever-generous Angela, since i could do my own deletes when they are required for moves.
  • Potentially on the negative side:
    • I've got a fairly odd brain, perhaps most relevantly when it comes to making subjective judgements; some might want to think hard enough about this proposal as to consider how well i understand and compensate for those oddities.
    • I am a confirmedly pseudonymous user, and some may decide that makes me in some senses less accountable than typical hard-core editors who, if i perceive correctly, are almost always more fully public.
    • I have a few internally imbedded insects, and i might nag the community about them, a little more often as an admin than i presently do (and if i do, then you were warned [smile]). Two policies come to mind in this regard; altho i think they need to be complied with (and altho i correct others' deviations from them), i consider them both bone-headed and look forward to the time when others agree with me:
    • I do not consistently monitor WP:VP, WP:CU, or WP:VfD, tho i regard doing so a "civic responsibility". I'd like to do a lot better at that, but hope only to do a little better, and may do no better.
    • My understanding of an admin's mandatory responsibilities is "do no harm, or back off when you realize you did". I consider that a shockingly low standard, but that's the extent of the commitment i'd see myself as taking on.
    • I'm the sort of person who would get this far, without having hired a campaign manager. Hey, there's no WP:Campaign manager page; where do i recruit one?
    • My sense of humor is nowhere near as clever as i usually imagine it is.
That's what i've got; i accept the nomination; you decide.

[Admin requirements][edit]

Hi. I liked your acceptance on the adminship page. Just wanted to respond to a couple things you said. First off, your evaluation of the admin standard as "do no harm" is pretty accurate. Admins aren't really required to do anything. There are a few tasks that only admins can do, so we do them, but no individual is ever required to do any of them. We're only required not to use admin abilities in violation of established policy and the wiki spirit. Secondly, being pseudonymous is no big deal. Some people prefer real names, but others don't. There are a very few jobs within Wikipedia where you're expected to reveal your RL identity (I think the Arbitration Committee does this but I'm not sure, and I know that candidate for new Wikimedia Board need to) but generally there's no restriction. Anyway, good luck and happy editing, Isomorphic 02:01, 21 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Sysop [Designation][edit]

I am very pleased to tell you that you are now an administrator after getting 100% support on RfA. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. Congratulations and good luck! Admin-related Things on My User Page[edit]

One of Your Friendly Local Neighborhood Admins[edit]

[This heading & section presently appear near the top of the page on User:Jerzy. --Jerzy(t) 18:47, 2004 Sep 3 (UTC) Even if you're fairly new here, you've probably noticed the generous set of powers available to all editors:

  • immediately effective editing,
  • creation of articles,
  • renaming articles,
  • viewing material deleted from an article, and using it in edits, and
  • probably others i now take so much for granted as not to recall them.

In addition, some 200 of the editors on Wikipedia also have several other permissions (that at other sites would probably be very closely held). These particular editors are called administrators (formally), admins, or sysops (short for system operators), according to the speaker's taste. (Admins are not called "moderators", IMO because every editor is expected to help provide moderation.)

Without trying to enumerate the details, i'll mention two kinds of problems admins can resolve:

  • In some cases where you can't talk someone out of spoiling a good article (among other requirements, normally one that conforms to our Wikipedia:NPOV policy), an admin can often help.
  • Sometimes the "Move this page" link does not do the job of changing the title on a page. Two important things need to be said about this:
    • If you "fix" the situation by cutting and pasting from one page to another, all you've done is cause damage (loss of editing history) that others will have to undo, before accomplishing in an acceptable way what you were trying to do.
    • When "Move this page" doesn't work, the problem is what is usually described as "trying to move a page to an existing page other than a redirect with no history". I won't say that description is wrong, but it occasionally is frustratingly unhelpful, and you don't need to waste time worrying about the details.

I have a notion (whatever the truth may be) that i've been an annoying burden on admins, before becoming one myself, and in effect begged for "more than my share" of assistance in doing page moves. So i especially welcome opportunities to repay my debt to previous admins by assisting future admins (you) with problem page moves. (And also with other needs.) Please ask.

The most likely times to catch me are from 16:00 (UTC), on a Monday through Thursday, until maybe 06:00 the next day. But you can also try later, earlier, and on weekends without it being completely futile. And of course there are literally hundreds of other sysops that you can try.

I also have some thoughts about how to be prepared in advance to find an admin quickly when you need one. Copy this markup of link a link to the next heading on this page onto your own talk page, and occasionally follow the link and cursor back to here to check whether i've put a link here to a discussion of those ideas:

Some Comments on Myself[edit]

[This heading and section, and the rest of what's subordinated to this head, appear further down on User:Jerzy. --Jerzy(t) 18:47, 2004 Sep 3 (UTC)]
I haven't felt much need to talk about myself on WP, but occasion arose 2004 May 20 when Jiang was kind enough to nominate me for adminship. The following has, fairly, been described as a (nomination) "acceptance speech". It is probably more than you want to know about me, but that subject is not likely to be important enough here to justify creating a more efficient account. On the other hand, i've dressed up the links, mostly for their instructional value to newcomers to WP.

(I got there about 15 hours after the nomination, and found a dozen votes already cast.)

Re Adminship Nomination[edit]

[At this point, i have a copy of the same "nomination acceptance speech that appears above in this archive, followed by the following "Outcome". --Jerzy(t) 18:47, 2004 Sep 3 (UTC)]

Outcome[edit]

(It didn't work [wink]: they voted for me anyway.)

The Dark Side: Complaints and Negative Criticism[edit]

(That isn't a "bring it on" heading; there have been some, which i'll locate by and by and move here.)

Complaints about Actions, not involving Admin Powers, being Unworthy of Admin[edit]

Hawai‘i[edit]

[Copied from super-ordinate section "Hawaii", which was moved 2004 Oct 17 Sun to User talk:Jerzy/Archive 03]
Jerzy, what has happened to you? You came here with such an open mind and tremendous promise as an editor and administrator. You've turned into a "jerk"—I apologize, I do not like to call people names, but your actions on the Hawaii pages are certainly bordering on that. Your only argument seems to be that "Hawaii" is (in your mind) the correct English spelling; despite the many arguments that have been pointed out to you on the Talk:Hawaii page that dispute that. Not wanting to expand your mind, you just go in and delete everything that a lot of good people have spent their valuable time making (in their POV, yes) correct. Does it not occur to you to consider that there might well be lots of persons in Hawai‘i and elsewhere who are English speakers and use Hawai‘i, not Hawaii? Is such arrogance as you are clearly displaying what you want to project as an admin? - Marshman 20:39, 15 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Livejournal Sig Link[edit]

Your Signature[edit]

[Copied from User talk:Blankfaze/archive4#Your Signature ]
Please take yr livejournal off your WP sig line. Fine on your user page, but it is burdensome to all to have more than your user & user talk pages splattered on everything you sign.
Thanks.--Jerzy(t) 00:15, 2004 Jul 6 (UTC)

May I ask what the problem is with having that in the sig, exactly? Just curious. :-) Mike H 00:20, Jul 6, 2004 (UTC)
  • Well, sorry, my signature is my signature. I do with it what I want. blankfaze | •• | •• 00:56, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[On the 8th, Jerzy(t) did a series of 2 edits over 15 minutes, and 6 more over an hour, on Wikipedia:Cleanup, largely removing recent timestamps, and in Blankfaze's case, the "livejournal" links within his sig along with them. (I know of no stable URL for the history of the 19 hours starting late 2004 July 7, but the applicable one of as of 07:30, 2004 Oct 17 (UTC) offers slight hints for the determined researcher.)

"Trimming" signatures[edit]

[Copied from User talk:Jerzy#"Trimming" signatures on 2004 Oct 17]
You, sir, are an asshole. Because I'm too lazy and too busy to get in some petty war over a signature, I will remove the link that you have a problem with. However, you are still an asshole. Don't ever mess with my (or anyone else's, for that matter) signature again. It's not your place. I'm not quite sure how you made admin, going around doing rude, unilateral, agregious shit like that. blankfaze | •• | •• 14:16, 8 Jul 2004 (UTC)

  • Now that I've cooled down a bit, I want to apologise for calling you an asshole. I was very offended, and took action very offensively, as such. I mean, how would you feel if I went around, changing your signatures? But anyway, I should have cooled down first. I sincerely apologise. blankfaze | (беседа!) 14:51, 8 Jul 2004 (UTC)
More under "Your Signature"[edit]

[Likewise copied from User talk:Blankfaze/archive4#Your Signature; the non-indented material is all part of a single edit by Jerzy(t), and Blankfaze interleaved within it his bulleted responses (which were unknown to Jerzy(t) until 2004 Oct 17).]
Hi, again, and thanks for the graceful retraction, which is much more important (to me personally) than the offense. (What can i say, i'm weird in general and part of that wierdness is knowing that i am what you called me, and just getting on with it, whatever the fallout of that is.)

And congrats on adminship; your ability to retreat a little on this (in the face of what i don't doubt was, for you, extreme provocation) IMO bodes well for your working into the role productively. (Hmm, having said that, i guess i should clear state that the incident was not at test for you.)

As you've asked only a rhetorical question, i'm not going to presume on yr hospitality by trying to clarify for you my thinking on yr sig, tho i find you now much closer to appearing receptive than in yr 1st response to me. But i'd be glad to discuss if you care to.

I will, tho, state a fact (w/o assuming you'll consider it relevant): i didn't intend to "[go] around ... changing your signatures", and i think you'll agree at least on reflection that you invited the inference that you either construed that intent or misjudged the actual extent of my activity. No offense taken, but since we're still in the context of your being offended and our communication not (yet, at least) being fluent, i consider it best to keep our fact-base as clean as possible, even in what seems to me a minor detail.

  • Mmmhm. My opinion on the matter is, although you were only "trimming" them to save space, that it is rude and inappropriate to edit someone else's signature without either permission from the user or a community consensus. That's just my opinion. But I'm content to put this in the past. It's not worth fighting over. Wastes time that can be used for something constructive.  :-) blankfaze | (беседа!) 17:09, 8 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Finally, my compliments on the Cyrillic chars in your new sig; i think it's clever & attractive even if the word (words?) is just "Talk" or a synonym. My acquaintance w/ Rooskiy is so weak (and the font so small on my screen) that i can't speculate further, but my curiosity was picqued by what appeared to me to be an upper-case Deh amid lower-case letters. [shrug].

  • Thanks. It's "(беседа!) (besyeda)" and it means "(Conversation!)"... I love Russkiy, I'm trying to learn. Anyway, one small link isn't worth a war. So... that's it!  :-) blankfaze | (беседа!) 17:09, 8 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thanks again for responsible communication on this.
