Marxism and Functionalism view the socialisation process in very different ways. While the Functionalist perspective perceives at it as integrating people into society by teaching them the basic norms and values and so reaching a consensus allowing them to lead a healthy life, the Marxists look beneath the surface and see a seething mass of inequalities and conflict between classes. The Marxists believe that the socialisation process reproduces the capitalist system by socialising people into consumers and teaching them where their rightful place is, usually under the subjugation of the ruling class.
