Oleg Sviatoslavich move

I just saw you move the article Oleg of Chernigov to Oleg Sviatoslavich. I think you should have waited a little more for feedback. For example I think the proper spelling is actually Oleg Svyatoslavich, but I see it has history(thanks to a bot actually, if it was an AndriyK-style move done with the impediment to futher move can be reveresed by an admin per AndriyK arbitration ruling). But it is no reason to modify the spelling because the software would allow only this move. I would like to ask you to move it back to "of Chernihiv" yourself and from there we'll see what to do next(I find it a good idea ), Brittanica styles him Oleg Svyatoslavich in Vladimir Monomakh article–Gnomz⁰⁰⁷(?) 06:23, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

This is what I am proposing to do, but I think Oleg Sviatoslavich is a case for a unilateral reverse –Gnomz⁰⁰⁷(?)

In my opinion Svyatoslavich would imply Свъятославич. Of course, only GOST would be ideal, but that would be far to confusing for most English speakers. Also keep in mind that in Polish and Lacinka (respectively) it's Swiatosław and Sviatasłaŭ. Kazak 07:16, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Karelia

Are you sure that Finnish is not official in Karelia? The republic's site is in Finnish and the very status of "republic" indicates that the титульная нация has special privileges. Kazak 20:56, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

[after edit conflict] Quite sure. Karelian/Finnish are in common use in the republic, but they do not have official status. Karelian is being promoted on the official level, and there is a strong push towards making it co-official with Russian, but so far that has not yet been accomplished. I commented to that effect on the article's talk, citing article 11.1 of the republic's Constitution, which should answer most of your other questions if you have any. Fifthed, this is not meant to be a gang up, but remember there is WP:CYR and although your renames were harmless there are a group of degenerates that would always put a stick in any wheel. Take a look at what happened to Maladzyechna, the talk page, and how long the dispute was kept going. Believe me there are people here that make this a priority of their wikitime. Is there any place where this discussion could occur? It seems grossly inefficient to discuss each Feodor and Vasili separately. Regardless, if that's our rule then Peter the Great should be Pyotr, Michael should be Mikhail, etc. Monarchs' names are always translated. WP is not and should not be a mirror of EB. I totally agree with you on that. WP illuminates topics in much greater detail because it has a huge resource of editors. EB has its own strength. This is not directly relevant to the issue at hand. The issue is what names should the articles use. As per WP:NC(UE):

If you are talking about a person, country, town, movie or book, use the most commonly used English version of the name for the article, as you would find it in other encyclopedias and reference works.

I checked one such other encyclopedia. You can check Columbia to complement my results (Columbia is available without subsrciption). We can also check the Google Books. My personal experience with EB is that it bases its usage on analysis of other sources. Whenevr we had disputes about the article names for the cities, I both analyzed the media usage and the EB's name. They alsways matched for all UA Oblast centers (see Kharkiv, Lviv, Luhansk but Kiev and Odessa). We should not just duplicate EB but we should take into account what name it chooses in deciding what name we choose. --Irpen 03:39, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Please take into account that the currect mayor of the city is more widely known as "Chernovetskyi", and, in particular, he is mentioned under this name at the website of City Administration. Edits without edit summaries tend to look like vandalism or spam!

I have noticed you commonly don't enter an edit summary. This causes me problems. When I patrol for vandalism, I use the summary to make a preliminary decision on whether or not the post is a vandal edit or not. If the summary is present (or at least a section header, the part inside the /* */), I commonly decide the edit is legit and move on.

However, if no edit summary is available, I typically resort to loading the diff for the edit. This takes time. For that reason, if your edits are all valid, I ask that you provide edit summaries. For more on how to enter an edit summary, please read Help:Edit summary.

Incidentally, it is not just me that appreciate having edit summaries. When you omit your summary, you may be telling various bots that you are vandalizing pages. For this reason, please consider providing that summary. It is very important.

The edit summary appears in black italics in the following places:

• Page history - list of changes to the page you edited
• User contributions - list of all your edits
• Watchlist* - list of recent changes to watched pages (logged-in users only)
• diff page - shows the difference between two edits
• Recent changes - list of all recent edits
• Wikipedia IRC channels - real time list of all edits
• Related changes - list of recent changes to pages linked to the page you edited
• List of new pages: shows the edit summary of the creation.

* Use the enhanced watchlist to see all recent changes in the watched pages, not just the last change in each page.

Hi Kazak! In responce to your edit summary: rv, within lang-uk and lang-ru scholarly transliteration is used. Actually, for Ukrainian articles (especially subdivision), we use the simplified Ukrainian National Translation system for transliterating Ukrainian languate names, as demonstrated in Wikipedia:Romanization of Ukrainian. —dima/talk/ 18:49, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

I understand that, but I was under the impression that we use the national system almost always for article titles and within the articles themselves. Within {{lang-uk}} and {{lang-ru}}, however, we use the scholarly system to most nearly approximate the original Cyrillic spelling. For example, in the article about Pyotr (Peter) Ilyich Tchaikovsky it refers to the composer by that spelling throughout the entire article and in the title, as that is the spelling by which he is known in English-speaking countries (and is the most understandable pronounciation-wise). Within {{lang-ru}}, however, his name is given as Pëtr Il'ič Čajkovskij because that is the scholarly transliteration- and closest Latin-alphabet approximation - of the Russian Пётр Ильич Чайковский. (I suggest we refrain from further reverts to the Shcholkine article until this dispute is resolved.) Cossack 19:08, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Kazak, I need help

Hello, my name is Max. Half-Russian Half-Jewish from Israel You dont know me, but i have done the current 8-people Russian people photo and the article Russians in Ukraine. I have also made a photo for Ashkenazi Jews: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Ashfamo2.JPG

But two people there claimed "its sexist" because it has no wimen, but i judged by contribution not by sex. So they tried to get my picture of by saying there's no licence (But there is) and other lies, and had an edit war against me. Those two now bring many friends there to support there. The root of this war has nothing to do with sexism actually, i just once said to Homo Sapiens he's not the boss so he started this war with many people he has driven their against me. I'm new and have no friends here yet, so i cant bring more people to the Edit-War (I tried to stop it), so i started looking for people who i think will be objective there. I found only three people: Kazak, Murenin C, Lucius 1976, Kuban Kazak, and you four i ask for help (Youre the only intelegent wikipedians i found). There bringing people against me and i'm alone. Now the page is prptected but not for long. The argument is down on the page i will give you, in the "Which Collage?". Wikipedia:Romanization of Ukrainian

Kazak, before changing the transliteration system, could you please propose it at the page's talk page first..? Quite a lot of articles already use the я → ia instead of ya transliteration and others which were mentioned on that page, and changing it is a rather major change.. I have reverted. Changes to standing policies and guidelines can only be made unilaterally when they are either very minor or uncontroversial. To introduce changes that would affect hundreds of existing articles one should propose them first (as Dima above said, the talk page is the perfect place to start). Ukrainian hip-hop

Thanks for information. I guess that being a host of a TV show does make you a popular person, it however does not make you a popular rapper.

As for WolFF, does "club rapper" mean he uses crank style or does it mean he only raps at parties? If he's a party MC without any published albums (mixtapes don't count), I don't think he's notable enough, as there are dozens of such MC who are only known to a very small selection of clubgoers.

I have never seen any of albums by these artists posted to rapsubs.com.ua, so how come they are popular and they had never been pirated by this wonderful web site? ;-)

As for YouTube, there are professional videos by a lot of people, Ugo for example, but you are not including them into the article, so I'm not sure this is a proper argument.

There is a list of criteria for musicians: Wikipedia:Music#Criteria_for_musicians_and_ensembles? Do these artists qualify?

My point is there are be a lot of older bands that are still not covered in the article, so including much younder bands looks like an advertisment. Netrat_msk (talk) 09:04, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

"In Eastern Europe it's hard to find that kind of technical expertise without decent money" - having spent my whole life in Russia, I sure know this :-) But having a pofessional video does not make an artist an established one. For example, there are miriads of wanna be pop starlets in ex-USSR, who have no recognizion but have professional videos paid off by their wealthy husbands or parents. Did you ever heard of Valov's 13-y.o. protege Zhorik? Althoug, I agree that this hardly applies to these rappers. If you are sure they are good examples of what's going on the scene and you are not assotiated with them, I guess it's safe to have them in the article. But anyway, mentioning younger bands and no mentioning older, more established bands is not OK, do you agree?

TNMK may sound like clowns sometimes, but songs like Voda prove that they are not ones. After all, when hip-hop originated in 70's, it was fun party music with a twist of humour, only embracing more serious themes of Public Ennemy and GangStarr much later. I believe Kharkov should be proud to have TNMK, and mindless club rap such as crunk is much more shamefull than light pop-rap tunes of TNMK and Boombox. Netrat_msk (talk) 10:08, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Тартак слушаю с огромным удовольствием, особенно "Систему Нервов". Но не сказал бы, что они "живее" ТНМК. Как по составу (в ТНМК даже больше инструменталистов, чем в Тартаке, есть даже духовики), так и по настроению. Вот альбом Jazz Live у ТНМК слышали? Это же что-то невероятное. Куда уж живее? За линки на Вову со Львова и ВУЗВ буду благодарен (ВУЗВ у меня был, но всего один сборник и в плохом качестве). Насчёт клипов - не знаю-не знаю, у российских 2H Company и Gunmakaz до сих пор клипов нет. Попсовые варианты вроде KREC считать не будем? Вообще мне казалось, что на Украине ситуация с музыкой получше, чем в России, заваленной попсовым продуктом.
