The new templates

Ok folks, here they are:

Template:imdb title

I've noticed, while wandering on some movie\actor articles, that the links (on the external links section) to IMDb.com vary too much.

I think that since Wikipedia should be organized and conventioned, we should set some standard to IMDb links, and since these are common, we could even add a template like:

{{imdb|name=Jack Nicholson&link=name/nm0000197}} (or however would be with two variables)

to be rendered as one of these:

• Jack Nicholson at the Internet Movie Database
• Internet Movie Database entry on Jack Nicholson
• Internet Movie Database entry on Jack Nicholson

Or whatever other standard everyone think is the best.

Since nobody replied, I've felt free to try it by myself. I just succeded in creating the template {{imdb}}, that work as follows:

First, you go to http://www.imdb.com and look for the exact page on whatever you're looking for. Then, copy the url, that will look like this:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000197

Remove the "http://www.imdb.com/" and keep the rest (IMPORTANT NOTE: remember to remove the last / after the .com or the link will be broken)

Now, add to the external links section:

*{{imdb|name=Jack Nicholson|entry=name/nm0000197}}

And bang, the result will be:

The same would work for movies and tv series:

Which was written as *{{imdb|name=''The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy''|entry=title/tt0371724}}

And just to compare:

I find that rather useful, and it'd be nice to have a good standard for these links I'd be glad with comments, improvements and suggestions :)

I've added the template in three pages already: Jack Nicholson, Douglas Adams and Danny Elfman. I think it looked nice.

Anyway, I'm not gonna add it in any other until I have support from other people.

If this template is rejected, I'll fix this three pages myself.

How do you find articles that currently have links to imdb?

By just searching we have some results: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=internet+movie+database&fulltext=Search . Also, we can try looking for IMDB only, in case it was written abbreviated.

In any case, most actors, movies, tv series and cartoons have a page at IMDb, and they all could be easily "templated" whenever needed.

Not to find fault or anything but:

• it would be nice if this italicised TITLES but not NAMES
• it would be better if it were all formatted as an external link instead of an internal link to Wikipedia's IMDB artical ad an external link. We don't really want 100s of articles pointing to our Internet Movie Database.

Looking for something like this output:

• Internet Movie Database entry on Jack Nicholson
• Internet Movie Database entry on Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Nunh-huh 07:06, 29 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Okay, I've removed the wikilink to the IMDB page. I took the bold off too. Indeed the italics on titles would be the best, but I'm not sure how we could make that work on the template... Any ideas? The best I could think of is that we manually add the ' when it's a title, like this:

One way to do it would be have two IMDB tags, one for names and one for titles. I don't know if that's better than relying on people to remember the italics. - Nunh-huh 23:18, 29 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hi Kieff. Nice to meet you. I really like this idea. At the moment the template requires us to know the particular code for the person/movie that we are linking to e.g. "nm0000197" for Jack Nicholson.

Note however that URLs like "http://www.imdb.com/Name?Nicholson,+Jack " - which we could link to without having to know the code, which seems neat. Unfortunately this method does not work for titles - www.imdb.com/Title?Easy_Rider works - but always gives a search results page - not the actual film. Is it worth having both Template:IMDb person and Template:IMDb title to avoid trying to do too much in a single template? Pcb21| Pete 11:25, 29 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I don't think that having to know the code is a problem. Whoever add the imdb link is gonna get to the proper page anyway. It'd be nice to make it easier, but I don't think it'd be reliable.

I too considered making two different templates, and so far that seems to be the best idea.

I suggest:

{{{imdbt|code=0371724|name=The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy}}

and

{{{imdbn|code=0000197|name=Jack Nicholson}}

(or perhaps "imdbname" and "imdbtitle" would be more apropriated)

Notice that we just need the numbers now, since very name will have "nm#" and every title will have "tt#".

I dont know much about wikipedia templates, but you can differentiate between titles and names from the prefix infront of the numerical code. We could use the "name" directory or the "nm" in the code. i.e., if it is possible to do in wikipedia.
