This whole episode is a disgrace to Wikipedia.

Carol Baxters information on both Mary Ann Bugg & Captain Thunderbolt is entirely false & should be removed immediately.

Her father, James Bugg, who was born in Essex, England in 1801, was convicted of stealing meat (two lambs, a wether sheep and two pigs) at the Essex Assizes held at Chelmsford in July 1825 and was sentenced to death. Reprieved to life transportation, he sailed on the convict transport "Sesostris" (incorrectly recorded as "James Brigg"), which reached Sydney on 21 March 1826. On 15 January 1827, he was assigned to the Australian Agricultural Company as a shepherd. Successful in his duties, he was promoted to overseer around 1829 and soon afterwards assigned to oversee the Company's outstation at Berrico. In 1834 he was granted a ticket-of-leave - the colonial equivalent of a parole pass - which allowed him to work for himself so long as he remained in the district and attended a regular muster; he chose to continue working for the Company.

In 1833, Bugg established a relationship with an Aboriginal woman he called Elizabeth, and from this union were born Mary Ann), John ,. He took up with an Aboriginal woman called Elizabeth and from this union were born Mary Ann (1834) and a brother named John (1836) and Eliza (1839). The older two children were christened by the Company's chaplain, Reverend William Macquarie Cowper, on 24 February 1839 & later they were sent to a boarding school in Sydney by the Australian Agricultural company when Mary Ann was 6 . Mary Ann learnt to read and write, sew, cook and other domestic skills. She had probably also been taught bushcraft and other Aboriginal skills by her mother during her early days in Stroud. Soon after the third child was born the couple were made to seperate because they would not allow their staff to marry Aborigines. I prefer to keep Wikipedia discussions on Wikipedia, so I am replying to your private email here.

My marking of Thunderbolt (New South Wales) as TotallyDisputed is not in any way intended as a slight on your good self nor on the quality of your research. But wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not a scholarly journal.

The Thunderbolt article should be an encyclopaedic article on Thunderbolt. It should present the accepted facts about Thunderbolt. If there exists more than one published interpretation of the known facts about Thunderbolt, then the various interpretations may be discussed in a neutral manner. However, the article must not attempt to convince the reader of the correctness of a particular interpretation. From Wikipedia:Neutral point of view:

The neutral point of view policy... says that we should fairly represent all sides of a dispute, and not make an article state, imply, or insinuate that any one side is correct.

In the Thunderbolt article, you state

I hope to be able to correct some of the myths and provable errors so often written in books and spoken about, in what is known as, "The Legend of Captain Thunderbolt."

Clearly, you are using the Thunderbolt article to present a thesis. Wikipedia is not the place.

Furthermore, it appears that your research has not been published in a peer-reviewed scholoarly journal. If you wish to publish your research, then you should publish it in such a journal. Only when a journal has published your research may it be considered a valid source of information for the construction of a tertiary resource such as an encyclopaedia. This is especially the case since some of your research relies on "family stories" and "Uralla folklore" – sources not easily confirmed or refuted. From Wikipedia:No original research:

If you have a great idea that you think should become part of the corpus of knowledge that is Wikipedia, the best approach is to publish your results in a peer-reviewed journal, and then document your work in an appropriately non-partisan manner.

Please stop adding inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Captain Thunderbolt. It is considered spamming and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or promotion. Because Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, additions of links to Wikipedia will not alter search engine rankings. If you continue spamming, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia.
