Ground-attack deleted[edit]

The initial lack of ground attack capability derives from the fact, that the FDF (Finnish Defence Forces) has an over-sized artillery branch compared to other countries of similar size. This together with advanced ballistics and trajectory modelling, and the defensive nature of the FDF made ground-attack capability unnecessary back then.--Elmeri B. It was also mandated by the Paris peace treaty of 1947 that banned bombers in the Finnish air force. This ban was later unilaterally rejected, but it played a part in the original specification and the competition. -- Petri Krohn 22:11, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

why does this page need to be mearged with F/A 18?

I see no reason for merging these articles; the Finnish F-18 is different enough from the F/A 18 to merit ist own article and has an interesting history of its own. I'll remove the merge header for now; if anybody disagrees, fell free to reinsert the header, but please explain why it should be merged -- Ferkelparade 21:53, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I dunno, I think it can be documented in the F/A-18 page. It's not that different. In fact, I would venture to say that we should simply have a section in the main article for "International customers" or something, and reference all of those. I think the Finnish version is pretty similar to the Swiss version, no? Also, someone decided to use the image of a USN F/A-18. Isn't that against the spirit of having a separate version? -Joseph 21:56, 2004 Aug 11 (UTC)

I totally agree on the image (in fact, there has been a request on WP:RP for an image of a Finnish F18 for quite some time, but unfortunately, I won't be in Finland anytime this year...), but I still think that major variants of planes merit their own articles, especially if they bear their own designation. Yes, the Swiss F18 is very similar, but that information could go into a new paragraph in the article - would be much better than just having a short note in the F/A-18 article. -- Ferkelparade 22:03, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)
