Size[edit]

As I'm still expanding this list, it's becoming more and more evident that its size will eventually prove problematic to handle. I'm not sure what can be done about this? (there are a lot of long lists on Wikipedia that far exceed this one but still...) I've been thinking about listing fairy tales by author but as I wrote below, it's a nightmare to figure out the exact source of most fairy tales... Anyone? --Steerpike 23:24, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Definition of a fairy tale[edit]

This page is urgently in need of some clean-up. The main text says that fairy tales with a known author are not strictly speaking fairy tales but that brings this table into *very* vague territory. By that definition only the Grimm's fairy tales and 1001 Nights are probably right. Andersen wrote his himself and so did Perrault probably, even if he is closer to the definition of a "folktale". Then there's the issue of several oddballs like Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast and The Wizard of Oz. I know these have unofficially entered fairy-tale territory but they are NOT folktales, even if Disney made them into a movie. Either we get rid of them (as well as Andersen's) or we expand the definition as given at the top of the page. So far I kept them in anyway.

I tried to expand the table as much as possible but it's a nightmare. Some of Perrault's tales were originally Italian so I'm not sure which author or date to list. Likewise the Grimms borrowed from Perrault (Little Red Riding Hood). Opinions? --Steerpike 13:02, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind the first note. I expanded the main text a bit as to nuance the exact definition of a fairy tale. Also, I removed the pictures of the Russian fairy tales since they were already added in the main Fairy tale article. However I would greatly appreciate if users could add some Russian titles to this list, as well as more African or Asian fairy tales. --Steerpike 16:09, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think this page still reflects a breakdown in understanding of what a [fairy tale] is. If you're having trouble deciding what belongs here and what doesn't, Aarne's tale type index would be a good place to start. Without the index or a similar structure, compiling a list of fairy tales is a naïve undertaking, because you will have people debating Cinderella vs Finette Cendron vs The Glass Slipper, and you adding original fiction like The Wizard of Oz. And while you're right to question Peter Pan and The Wizard of Oz, Beauty and the Beast most certainly is a fairy tale by any definition -- and by a good many names. - 70.56.253.76 02:07, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Wizard of Oz[edit]

Including The Wizard of Oz suggests that we can't tell a fantasy fiction from a fairy tale. The Golden Goose might be added, if this were really a list of fairy tales. --Wetman 01:05, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Well the Wizard of Oz-page claims it was the first widely translated American fairy tale. I suppose it could be included. I have more qualms with this list than that actually... --Steerpike 12:05, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
      • So Americans can't tell fantasy fiction from a fairy tale, apparently. - 70.56.253.76 02:09, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
At the time that he wrote it, there was no genre called "fantasy" and he called it a fairy tale. . . then J. R. R. Tolkien's famous essay on fantasy is called "On Fairy tales" because of the same issue. I don't think many people classify it as a fairy tale nowadays. Goldfritha 18:35, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Celtic fairy tales[edit]

How come no celtic fairy tales about? - FrancisTyers 15:25, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to add them. Which ones did you have in mind? --Steerpike 17:41, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Variants[edit]

Some variants are so clearly distinct as to easily warrant their own entries. But when the most logical place is to put two stories in one entry, like Grimms' and Perrault's Cinderella -- should we list two titles here as a reference? Goldfritha 15:25, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

With some regret for the work put into this list (by you, Goldfritha, but myself also), I propose a complete rewrite of this article. I say we drop the table and sort fairy tales by author or country. That seems like a much more logical system to me, and we can add fairy tales multiple times if several authors published them. What do you say? --Steerpike 17:30, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Probably a good idea. It's just a reorganization; none of the information we put in needs to be lost. 18:37, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps we should make this a list of _collections_ of fairy tales, or else a list of fairy tales not otherwise collected, with a longer list of notable fairy tale collections. (Say, does anyone know where we can find a list of the fairy tales Alexander Afanasyev collected in Narodnye russkie skazki? The titles at least?) Goldfritha 19:15, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
