Thank you for your welcome message[edit]

Thanks for your kind and useful welcome message. I like your new name! Avenue 13:17, 6 Dec 2004 (UTC)

  • My pleasure, and thanks! -- ClockworkSoul 13:22, 6 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hey, I just saw your welcome message on my talk page (like 2 months after. LOL) But thank you so much for it. It's nice to see that there are nice people here :) --Rafa 22:19, Feb 15, 2005 (UTC)

Watching over me[edit]

I was scared to get this notice that someone was watching me, but I feel better now. THanks. SarahSmiles 13:38, 6 Dec 2004 (UTC) Sarah Smiles

  • Heh. Well, you have nothing to be scared of. Good luck, and happy editing! -- ClockworkSoul 15:52, 6 Dec 2004 (UTC)

SarahSmiles 02:21, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC) The last changes to these pages are cut and paste theft from http://frenchpropertydigest.com/july2001/leisure-4.html and how do I change them back? Some joker did it, and I feel violated. If it was good original work, fine. Whaaaa.

  • I know the feeling - it makes one feel... dirty. Good catch on the copyrighted material, though. The easiest way to revert a page is to do the following:
    1. Goto the page you want to revert, and click the "history" tag.
    2. Click on the date of the last "good" revision; that should bring you to that version of the page.
    3. Click "edit this page". At the top of the page there should be this warning: "WARNING: You are editing an out-of-date revision of this page. If you save it, any changes made since this revision will be removed."
    4. Simply comment that you're reverting the page, and why, and click save.
    5. Congratulate yourself on a job well-done. :)
Good luck, and thanks for catching that! -- ClockworkSoul 04:05, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

The Humungous Image Tagging Project[edit]

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

I couldn't find the use of these terms in my dictionary, nor have I ever come across them in my extensive reading of bird books. Do they apply to all cranes, or just some species, perhaps Common Crane or Sandhill Crane? Is this a term restricted to the US, or does it have wider currency?

Please revert my reversion if I've got it wrong, I just wanted to be sure of the accuracy of the statement since i didn't recognise your user name. jimfbleak 06:24, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Have you considered "running" for the arbitration committee? Just thought I'd throw it out there! -Zenosparadox 07:30, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

  • I would consider it, but sadly I just don't have the time to devote right now. What did I do to make you think I might make a good arbitrator? -- ClockworkSoul 07:33, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Your talk page is a testament to the paternal role you play for many wikipedians. Your reprimand/notice to me concerning one of my posts showed a dedication to the dialectic and truth, that one should always justify and give evidence, and engage in dialogue. Further, your very unwillingness (due to time) shows that you recognize fully the responsibility involved. I'm reminded of Gore Vidal's comment, "Any American who is prepared to run for president should automatically, by definition, be disqualified from ever doing so." When one applies that to people who must be neutral, such as arbitrators, it resonates even more. Power in the hands of those who take it reluctantly is often more well vested than in the hands of those who seek it. I understand though, just figured I'd throw it out! -Zenosparadox 15:48, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Adminship[edit]

your question[edit]

Posted on User_talk:Netoholic

I've been meaning to ask somebody this, and I figure you may know: is there any for an admin to view the last active IP of a non-anon user? Many thanks. -- ClockworkSoul 23:04, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

No, only a system administrator (Tim Starling comes to mind) can find that out. -- Netoholic @ 00:38, 2004 Dec 10 (UTC)
Ah, okay. Thanks. -- ClockworkSoul 22:17, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
CWS, why do you need to know? - Ta bu shi da yu 02:25, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
In reading recent accusations of sockpupperty and watching recent vandals rotating usernames, it seemed to me that the ability to cross-reference IP addresses would render the former moot, and the latter somewhat easier to deal with. -- ClockworkSoul 22:17, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
tell me about it. I said the same to Viriditas! - Ta bu shi da yu 22:21, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Do you think its worth it for us to propose that administrators get the ability to see the source IP address of an edit, in addition to the author? I can't think of any major security issues, especially if it's only admin that can see them. -- ClockworkSoul 22:25, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Absolutely! That would solve many sock-puppet issues. - Ta bu shi da yu 22:26, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Would you like to write survey, or shall I? :) -- ClockworkSoul 22:30, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Could we shift this to WP:AN? things might get confusing otherwise :) Ta bu shi da yu 23:01, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

RFC pages on VfD[edit]

Should RFC pages be placed on VfD to be deleted? I'm considering removing Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Slrubenstein, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Jwrosenzweig and Wikipedia:Requests for comment/John Kenney from WP:VFD. Each of them was listed by CheeseDreams. Your comments on whether I should do this would be appreciated. - Ta bu shi da yu 03:29, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Request[edit]

Hi, Neutrality and I are engaged in an edit war. He has also contributed to a request for arbitration (and RfC) against me. He has just blocked me.

Please note that the block occurred just after I had discovered a new RfAr against myself, and was starting to provide rebuttals to it.

I consider this an abuse of his adminship.

Could you look into this action, and consider whether un-blocking me is appropriate? CheeseDreams 23:14, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Mmmm... vandals[edit]

Thanks, I wasn't expecting a welcome message. :-) I'll mostly be contributing with minor edits, but when I see a short, disparaging comment as an entry, I'll probably be reporting vandals, too! Deathphoenix 00:57, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Barnstar of vigilance[edit]

What do you want it to look like? I'll make one. Pedant 08:21, 2004 Dec 11 (UTC)

  • Great! I'm not exactly surewhat it should look like, though. I was thinking maybe a barnstar over a background of graffiti, but anything creative would do nicely. Besides, if we come up with a better image after, we can always overwrite the old one. -- ClockworkSoul 14:09, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • I've got three possible candidates, but I'm calling it the "Purple Barnstar". You could either use the Purple Barnstar instead of, or in addition to the Barnstar of vigilance. I think you could use the Purple Barnstar to award those who consistently have their user pages vandalised by vandals in retaliation for their efforts to fight vandalism. This is loosely based on the awarding of the Purple Heart to those wounded in battle. Since some people consider it a badge of honour to be the target of vandals, why not have a Barnstar? And for those who don't like getting their user pages vandalised, this would be the silver lining on the cloud.
  • The first is a plain purple barnstar, the second is the purple barnstar with a "V" painted on the front, and the third is the purple barnstar with three "W"s painted on the front. Check these out and let me know what you think. -- Deathphoenix 20:13, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome[edit]

Hi. Thankyou for your welcome. However I am already expirienced with wiki. I have a question though. Do you know how I would be able to hide the index (the articles listed by name or number) of articles in a category, so it just shows the editable page content? --Hierarchypedia 18:47, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Sock puppets[edit]

Hi, could you possibly take a look at this and see whether you think these are sock puppets? If so, could you consider banning them for vandalism (and the use of sock puppets), so that, by use of the autoblocking, it becomes possible to work out who they really are?

Grazi[edit]

I've already written a dozen or so articles here and there before now though. I have one question though, that i've had trouble finding in the help pages provided. How do I make an article capable of being linked by words other than it's title?

IE, the page on Long Range Surveillance should also be linked by LRS, but only the former does so. What tag is necessary here to give the namespace addition?

For the record I've 3 years of service in LRS, 5 in the army, 1 in combat.

RLTW!

Those wacky wikilinks[edit]

Posted to User talk:Wakowill

If you want to make LRS link to Long Range Surveillance, you simply put the new name inside the link, seperated by a |, as follows:

[[Long Range Surveillance|LRS]]

Your result will be this: LRS.

I hope this helps!

Deletion, merge, do nothing?[edit]

I can't figure out what to do with an article that isn't an article, just a header, and isn't necessary or useful for any reason. Except I added Talk page to this nonexistent article. Do I request some particular action, or what. What I have in mind particularly is US Exclusive Economic Zone whose title existed because somebody tried to link to it from United States Coast Guard, and linking there to the already existing Exclusive Economic Zone is exactly what was needed. I've fixed that link (the only one that appeared on the What Links Here page). Does anything need to be done about the empty one (especially since I added that talk page to it)? Gene Nygaard 18:11, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)

  • It's okay to have an empty link. If you like, you can create the article yourself. If not, just leave it and somebody else will eventually do it. -- ClockworkSoul 02:10, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)
    • No. What I'm saying is that there is no reason why anybody should create this article. There is an extensive article on Exclusive Economic Zone in general. There is no reason for that page inviting someone to make the article--there's no reason to believe that there would ever be any need for this article. Throw it--and my comment about that point--away. The link is no longer empty. It was the articleless title to which it linked that should be thrown away. Gene Nygaard 06:43, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Sorry its all in German but I saw several reports about it and for me there was no way of mis understanding the topic. The reaktivity against water is not very high the water is a real bad nucleophile for SN2 reaktions the internal reaktion with the Sulfure is by far faster but even with this intramolekular reactive sight it is still storable. If it would reacte fast with water decontermination would be easy, which is not true. A ABC-Defence privat from Germany)

Sorry for the late reply and thanks for dealing with my "objections" on FAC (none of them were really objectionable). You've tackled a much more ambitious task than I did with the WWI article. Geoff/Gsl 05:13, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Sri Lanka[edit]

Godric, regarding the Sri Lanka political situation, the answer is that the country is in a low-level civil war. See Tamil Tigers for some info.

I think it's important to mention M. A. Mohanraj's point that many of the religious charities in the region are indeed funding insurgents, counterinsurgents, or plain old terrorists. In fact maybe that should be moved to the top of the page instead of relegating it to the Sri Lanka section. People who want to send money to those organizations are entitled to do so, but they should know what they're getting into.

As for the endorsement of Savordaya, that's a secondary issue. Maybe the easiest approach is to just remove the endorsement and leave the other stuff. Phr 00:13, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Oops, that was intended for Godrickwok. I clicked on a link you'd left on his talk page, that I thought came from him. Phr

Sorry, perhaps I was not being clear. If an article already exists as a name, ie Long Range Surveillance, and I want it to be searchable by a common synonym (LRS) how do I go about that? As it is now, searching for LRS or LRRPS return no results, even though the page exists under a different name.

I think I understand. Perhaps what you wish to create is a "redirect" page.

To do this, create a new article called LRS (click on this red link to do that). In that article, place only the following text:

#REDIRECT [[Long Range Surveillance]]

Whenever anybody goes to the "LRS" page, they will be automagically forwarded to Long Range Surveillance!

I hope this help more than the last info I gave you... feel free to ask again if I'm still being dense. – ClockworkSoul 08:53, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Newcomer award[edit]

  • You're very welcome: you deserve it. I know exactly what you mean about putting off work: most of the time I spent writing chemical warfare was stolen, in one form or another, from some other more important task. :-)[edit]

I came across User:ClockworkTroll/Name the Admin Candidate just now and was truly impressed by your willingness to compromise for the community's sake. Not everybody would be willing to take a step back during such personal debates, as I've witnessed before at the RfA. I don't really know you, but I hafta say that what you did there was very admirable. That act alone showed your sincerity and coolheadness, hence your adequacy as an admin. So, here's a belated symbolic vote of support. WP has way too much stubborness and closed ears. I'm glad to see a sign of WP's friendly and cooperative spirit again. Anyway, "ClockworkSoul" sounds way cooler! --Menchi 02:21, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)

  • Thanks, Menchi! I'm always glad one somebody runs across that page. I think it turned out well, and I'm very happy with my new name. Honestly, though, it isn't so much that I'm very coolheaded, but that I have little patience for bickering. ;) – ClockworkSoul 03:33, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Human evolution project[edit]

Hi Clockwork,

Please take a look at Human evolution. I made some changes to your Human evolution template. I've been improving the article and was looking for something to put on the right hand side as far as an image, and I stumbled across your human evolution template. I made some changes, is that OK? It was not in use, but I really like the concept of linking the various pieces of the human evolution project together with such a template. I did change the float from left to right as well, but I'm not sure how that will look on the pages where a taxobox also exists. I rewrote the intro to the human evolution article also I'm working on exanding it look at the talk page for info on that.Look forward to your comments/suggestions. --JPotter 08:37, Jan 29, 2005 (UTC)

It has been pointed out to me that my assumption that Image:Dressing the Wounded during a Gas Attack (Austin O Spare).jpg was public domain is wrong. There's a good chance it is, but I don't know for certain, so I was hoping to get it deleted. It can probably be uploaded again after 15 May next year (2006) when the life+50 rule would apply. On the other hand, being reminded of it may desensitize them, and make further viewings easier. --SPUI (talk) 05:10, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Again, that may or may not be true, but can the same not be said of, say, gay porn? I don't especially wish to be desensitized to either one, and I can't think of anybody that has the right to make that decision for me. – ClockworkSoul 05:18, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The same can be said of Xenu. Some Scientologists may not wish to be reminded of how others view them as ridiculous. Anyway, my point is that this argument is rather silly; you guys always have to be so serious when I try to stick it to the man. Whatever. --SPUI (talk) 05:25, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)
