Disambiguation[edit]

There are many people called Mark Williams - it's one of the most common first-last name combinations in Western society. I'd like to create another page for a different Mark Willams, and I think there's a good case for a disambiguation page here. Any objections?

Obviously there will need to be a lot of redirections on other pages but I'm up for sorting that out I think.

Unsourced material about him being a bad driver[edit]

Although I found the comments about Mark's driving amusing, I don't think they are really suitable unless we can have some proof, e.g. how many points he has on his license! What does anyone else think? [The previous unsigned comment was added by Hesperus (talk · contribs), 11:26, 2 April 2006 (UTC).][reply]

Such material should simply be removed, per WP:BLP. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 16:39, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"demonstrated his intentions to dominate the game"? That doesn't sound like an encyclopedia line. Doesn't any young, promising, player in any sport want to dominate that sport? Surely, that can be stated better... something like mentioning potential to be at the very top? 72.184.115.50 17:18, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image[edit]

Can we have an image please, I'm not an expert on image collecting [The previous unsigned comment was added by Cream147 (talk · contribs), 07:39, 21 March 2007 (UTC).][reply]

Children[edit]

They've got another one now, or are expecting one or something. I think she's had it. Look into it. [The previous unsigned comment was added by WilliamMelvin (talk · contribs), 13:18, 22 April 2007 (UTC).][reply]

Well, find a source and add the information with a source citation. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 16:39, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

When will somebody do their bloody research and find out about his second child rather than just pretend he doesn't have one? [The previous unsigned and misplaced rude comment was added by WilliamMelvin (talk · contribs), 13:30, 29 April 2007 (UTC)][reply]

Get to it, then. It's about time you did something non-disruptive at Wikipedia for a change. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 00:44, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The other Mark Williams of snooker[edit]

The other M.W. mentioned in the article needs a middle initial and at least a stub article so that the two can be told apart in the stats. Both were active in 1990s, overlappingly. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 15:36, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article is pretty poor[edit]

This article is really bad, I'd recommend deleting everything but the infobox and starting again. Mglovesfun 14:45, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've added some references and removed some of the POV statements, but it needs a lot more work (the personal info and career info are mixed together, and there's still some POV stuff present). I'll try and rewrite it later when i've got some more time, if noone else does it first. Paul 1978 12:16, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's a bit better now but more work to be done to tidy it up and keep folks from over-complicating the introduction with facts that can come further down. bigpad (talk) 19:23, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Colourblindness[edit]

I've removed this reference because, although i'm pretty certain i've heard it mentioned in commentary on matches, i can't find any reference to it online.

Due to an eyesight problem he is unable to distinguish between the red and brown balls, which has occasionally required him to request clarification from referees. Paul 1978 23:48, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tidying up[edit]

I've sectioned the article into catergories eg, 1992-98, 1999-2003 so that it reads better i've also added a couple of references and expanded his early career, anyone feel it reads better now? Samasnookerfan (talk) 15:44, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Samassnookerfan has done a lot of work on Mark Williams and it is well researched; good on him! On the other hand, and at the risk of sounding churlish, I wonder if it, and articles of other leading snooker players, need to be so biographical and to document their careers year by year or match by natch, almost? The article is part of an enclyopedia and not a potted biography. Let's imagine that a reader is curious about snooker and checks out the articles on the leading players. Would he or she be prepared to read through a blow-by-blow account of their career? Probably not. But if the player's main achievements were documented with perhaps a summary of career highlights, not necessarily covering every year, wouldn't the effect be better? I was referred to the article on Adam Gilchrist as one that was very good. I don't agree actually but it could be a model to follow.
My advice would be to make sure that the key information is there: cut out things that are not necessary (e.g. the ref. to being beaten by a heavier boxer) and see how the article progresses. Comments anyone? bigpad (talk) 21:38, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Century breaks[edit]

Is this source reliable for century breaks? Who updates it? Why are you monitoring it so closely, 89.230.231.3? Perhaps you're watching Williams play live, racking them up, over in Poland? Do let us know. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:20, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think Cwm is in Ebbw Vale[edit]

The infobox states that Williams is from Cwm in Ebbw Vale, which I think is geographically inaccurate because Cwm is a little village in the Ebbw valley, while Ebbw Vale is a town a few miles north of Cwm and a completely separate place. It might be loosely OK to say that Cwm is in the "Ebbw Vale" (i.e. the valley of the Ebbw River) but for the purposes of the infobox it's probably safer just to say that Cwm is in (the county of) Blaenau Gwent. Same thing applies to Early career section. Rodney Baggins (talk) 11:57, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. Could be "Cwm, near Ebbw Vale". Same applies for Victor Spinetti, but John Quantick seems to have escaped so far. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:13, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Three world championships ??[edit]

"In addition, he is the first player (and to date, the only player) to win all three versions of the professional World Championship – the World Snooker Championship, the Six-red World Championship and the World Seniors Championship."

This comment is absurd, it should not be anywhere, let alone the led paragraph. There is only one version of the world championship. In particular, the six red championship is not a snooker world championship at all, it is a two-bit variation of snooker; anyone who thinks it carries equivalent prestige to the World Championship of snooker has a very strange outlook.

I kind of agree it shouldn't be in the lead. However, these are billed as world championships. If there is a source out there that says this, then we should include it. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 13:10, 21 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I could stage a four red World Championship tomorrow, I would be the only entrant so I would be World Champion. So what?

Information icon Hello Pricejb and thank you for your comments. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment, or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when. Thank you.

As for the current Talk item, I have nothing in particular to add to the discussion, but I have done some work on Mark Williams' article, so I'd be happy to work on a compromise if that seems more appropriate. As Lee said above, maybe that info shouldn't be in the lead? Rodney Baggins (talk) 19:42, 21 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Your event wouldn't be recognised by the WPBSA or independent sources, and thus, not by Wikipedia. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 21:01, 21 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Uhhh...maybe some sort of update to the intro, tho?[edit]

Hi there, people who are watching this page.

I don't really know how dilligent the niche sport Wiki community is these days, but just in case nobody's really working on these kinds of details, I'm mostly putting this here as a reminder to myself to come back and fix it up a bit when I have some more time. The introduction to the Mark Williams article makes it sound like he fizzled out and was never relevant ever again after his second world championship--with no mention of this THIRD world championship, an event I traveled across the ocean to witness in 2018. Plus, he's also, as of this writing, in the semi-final of the 2022 world championship, so I rather think the article's introduction needs at least a little bit of revision.

Anyway, I'll try and do it myself eventually...I'll at least wait to see how this semi-final turns out....wouldn't want to have to edit in his present-day exceptional achievements TWICE. =) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Randall00 (talkcontribs) 00:09, 28 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
