Vermont Governors[edit]

As with the Lieutenant Governors, a legend would be handy to explain the different colored names and table cell backgrounds.

Counting Thomas Chittenden's terms of office[edit]

Thomas Chittenden is listed here as the first and third governor of the independent Vermont Republic and as the first governor of the State(-of-the-Union) of Vermont. Vermont's admission to the Union was done differently from what was done with (if I'm not mistaken) most (or all?) states admitted later. The government of the entity calling itself the State of Vermont (often described now as the independent Vermont Republic) simply continued to function when Vermont was admitted to the Union: when the state was admitted to the Union, Governor Chittenden was not sworn in to a new office as governor of the State(-within-the-Union) of Vermont, but simply continued his one-year term begun less than five months earlier; and likewise other officers of the state; and no new constitution of the state went into effect, but the 1786 Constitution of the State of Vermont simply continued in effect. For many purposes internal to the state, no new entity superseded the republic that before March 4, 1791 was independent of the United States. The table gives an impression that Chittenden's term as governor of the independent republic ended, and his term as governor of a state within the Union began, when Vermont was admitted to the Union. But nothing like that happened. His term as the third governor of the independent republic and his term as the "first" governor of a state within the Union were not in fact two different terms: they were both the same one-year term that began in October 1790 and ended in October 1791. Chittenden was elected 19 times, not 20.

Might there be some way of organizing the presentation of information differently so that a misleading impression would not result? Michael Hardy (talk) 21:45, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
