Are all biopsies done to determine if there is cancer?

Breast Biopsy

Why is this article so heavily based around breast biopsy? It makes the reader think one might only do a FNA for breast cancer. is breast cancer just an example?Drchazz (talk) 19:11, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Cancer and Biopsy in Nature Cure

This section seems out of place in a mainstream cancer article, so I've removed it. Biopsying tumors is standard procedure. To suggest otherwise would represent a fringe practice that is outside the scope of standard medical practice. This material may be more appropriate in an alternative medicine article. Depending on the suspected cancer, biopsy is contraindicated. Eg, a mass in a location characteristic of germ cell tumor plus abnormally high alpha fetoprotein: given this combination, some authorities recommend surgical complete removal without prior biopsy because biopsy is likely to involve "spillage" and the risk of consequent metastasis is too high. --Una Smith (talk) 20:04, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Thoughts

I've started a major expansion. My approach is to try to discuss various aspects of biopsy and list a number of biopsies in each discussion to illustrate with a minimum of duplication, while "touching all the bases. Ultimately, topics that might result in lists are modality (direct detection, endoscopic, image guided), indication (screening, surveillance, diagnosis of lesion). As a number of specific biopsies have their own articles, I don't want to overduplicate. I did a lot of this from memory, so I will work on tracking down more references.Novangelis (talk) 15:41, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

...for the Medinvents Spirotome. It's just one device among several that use less-common variations of sample-removal procedures for breast biopsies. It could be grouped with the Intact, the Cassi, and maybe the Site Select in an "Other Breast Biopsy Methods" section. we have the impression that you don't know how Spirotome works and what it can do more than the tru cuts and the vacuum assistant biopsysystems (functionning only for the breast). How does biopsy cost in USA split

How does the cost of a biopsy in USA (average cost $5,000 ? to $14,000 ??) split between the physician or interventional radiologist , lab, and pathologist ? Does it vary much by type of cancer ? - Rod57 (talk) 22:15, 26 March 2016 (UTC)

The Cancer liquid biopsy section seems out of place

As written the Cancer liquid biopsy section is about what is in development and might be useful in the future. It should perhaps be moved to a section such as New developments (although there is apparently an FDA approved 'liquid biopsy' that could be described here ? - Rod57 (talk) 22:21, 26 March 2016 (UTC)

Add info on/links to medical equipment involved in biopsy

There don't seem to be Wikipedia pages on how biopsy equipment works, such as a biopsy gun. It would be good to mention some equipment here, and link to relevant pages (even if they don't exist yet). I lack the background to provide this information. Wstomv (talk) 16:54, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
