AfD closure note: Whether this list is redirected or merged, and where, is a debate that can be handled out of AfD. --Deathphoenix ʕ 19:20, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Source[edit]

The original version of this list is from a public domain resource from the NIH Office of Rare Diseases at http://ord.aspensys.com/diseases.asp

From their site:

An orphan or rare disease is generally considered to have a prevalence of less than 200,000 affected individuals in the USA. Certain diseases with more than 200,000 affected individuals are included but subpopulations of these conditions may be less than the prevalence standard for rare disease. This list includes rare diseases and conditions for which information requests have been made to the Office of Rare Diseases. It is updated on a regular basis.

I have confirmed with the administrator of the original list that it was in the public domain. She confirms that it is an NIH public domain resource, even though it is kept on a subcontractor's website for reasons of administrative convenience.

She would like us to include a disclaimer that it is neither definitive nor complete.

Can you split it into several alphabet ranges? It's way too long for one page and takes the browser several minutes to format. -phma

The website (referenced above) no longer exists. Current prevalence estimates indicate that Tourette syndrome is no longer considered a rare condition. Sandy 21:28, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reorganizing[edit]

I think this page should be reorganized into different pages to reduce its length. What about splitting this page into something like List of rare diseases starting with E, similar to the way in which the List of diseases page is split. --MZMcBride 02:47, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've now reworked the article to mirror the List of diseases one. Lugnuts 19:15, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unbelievable[edit]

I don't believe that there are this many rare diseases. I think that it's just nitpicking, and that most of them are just variations on other diseases. Perhaps there is some sort of commission to doctors who discover new diseases? Willnz0 09:44, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A LOT of these diseases listed are NOT rare. I wouldn't consider asthma or emphysema "rare" diseases.--Susan Nunes

yeah this list needs to be completely redone 68.193.33.106 00:58, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
