Daughter of Darius?[edit]

I contest the factuality of this article. Roxana was the daughter of Darius, unless there was another Roxana in present-day Uzbekistan. I want this clarified please! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Darkmagi2017 (talkcontribs) 21:06, 31 August 2006‎

No, Darius I lived a couple of centuries before Roxana. There may well be another Roxana in present-day Uzbekistan, but that has nothing to do with the subject of this article, who lived over two millennia ago. —Lowellian (reply) 20:21, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Darius III, Mr IQ!

Historical Novels[edit]

There was a historical novel section that I think was deleted when the citation section was moved. I have added back the section and expanded it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pavasta (talkcontribs) 02:39, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

@PericlesofAthens: Was her background Sogdian-Persian or just Sogdian? --Wario-Man (talk) 11:25, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wario-Man: I haven't removed the "Persian" thing because it was there originally. I think it's justified in the sense that nearly all peoples within the Achaemenid Empire, especially the various Iranian-speaking groups, could be characterized as "Persians", even if they weren't native speakers of the Old Persian (a Southwestern-Iranian dialect, much like modern Farsi spoken in Iran). I've consulted multiple sources that claim she was ethnically Sogdian and hailed from Bactria (of course the Bactrians had their own Iranian language that was similar but separate from Sogdian, an Eastern Iranian language, but that's another issue). Pericles of AthensTalk 12:18, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really understand why Persian is included either. I can't find any reliable sources that state she was Persian. Persians were just one of many Iranic groups in the region. Even under the Achaemenid empire each region was given its own name and identity e.g. Bactria, Sogdia, Arya. Persianization of that region mostly occurred post-Islam. It just seems like laziness to leave it there and might cause confusion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.98.4.100 (talk) 12:38, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Bactria, as well as Sogdia, were Persian Satrapies. So it is, in fact, quite feasible, if not likely, as some would argue, that Roxana's father, Oxyartes, was a Persian nobleman, by descent, living in Bactria (Same argument goes for Spitamenes). 2601:882:101:17E6:E91F:D482:9B14:A8E4 (talk) 04:37, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Bactrian and not Sogdian[edit]

Why was my edit “a Bactrian(not Sogdian)[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]“ reverted ?

Roxana and her father Oxyrates were described as Bactrian in every primary source we have, the assumption that she is Sogdian comes from the fact that he wedding of her and Alexander took place in Sogdia and that they have met in Sogdia. I have added several sources that state Oxyartes and Roxana to be Bactrian and that they were taking refuge in Sogdia at that time which was also the reason for them(Alexander and Roxana) encountering for the first time in Sogdia. I have added enough sources, primary and secondary, regarding this, how is not an improvement then but gets reverted, the assumption of her being Sogdian or her father being Sogdian is wrong and not proven by any primary source.

Ancient sources should always be taken with a grain of salt (that's what we have modern sources for, so they can correct mistakes/bias made by ancient sources among other things). Also, you spammed too many citations, not to mention you added "not Sogdian" , which is not encyclopediac. Also, do keep in mind that Sogdia was part of the satrapy of Bactria. It's interesting how you also ignore the sources that do call her a Sogdian. She might have been Bactrian, but the way you did it is not correct. --HistoryofIran (talk) 16:40, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
“Not Sogdian” were not my own words but just quoted from Iranica, check the site of Oxyartes inn Iranica it says it itself. Bactria and Sogdia has one Satrap yes, but I didn’t “spam” I just added citations of authentic sources. I haven’t seen a modern source that explicitly explains her to be Sogdian, the most I’ve seen is just calling her Sogdian without any further explanation and just based on the fact that Alexander met her in Sogdia. While we have sources saying that they were taking refuge in Sogdia, which indicates them not be from Sogdia as it wouldn’t make sense to take refuge in a place you are actually from. If you can show me a source explaining her to be Sogdian and proving it too and not only calling her “Sogdian” and that’s it I would be happy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xerxes931 (talkcontribs) 16:58, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Okay since it’s the interest of both of us to have a historical correct as possible article how should we do it in the correct way? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xerxes931 (talkcontribs) 17:00, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well you could start by listening to my points, and also read the rules. --HistoryofIran (talk) 17:04, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

So I should always start with a talk before editing the article ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xerxes931 (talkcontribs) 17:40, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@HistoryofIran I’ve read the rules now I don’t really see what exactly I’ve done wrong. What would your suggestion for the editing would be since you acknowledge her being likely Bactrian but are not happy with my edit? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xerxes931 (talkcontribs) 22:20, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You've clearly not read the rules if you can't see what's wrong. I've literally mentioned it up above as well. WP:COMPETENCE. --HistoryofIran (talk) 22:23, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
