Minor Edit to Correct Grammer[edit]

I changed ". . . that she is know as "a prophetess . . ." to ". . . that she is known as "a prophetess . . .". I hope no one minds. Finnbjorn (talk) 12:04, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Golden boar[edit]

Didn't someone end up with a golden boar as a result of this story? Along with the ship, hair and spear, I could've sworn there's a boar...yee --Dante Alighieri 17:42, 4 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Dark elves[edit]

Where did dark elves come from? I'm almost certain that it was the dwarves that made Sif's hair. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ravenwing (talkcontribs) 02:30, 8 March 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Sif/Jarnsaxa[edit]

Hello,

I've found a lot of reference to Jarnsaxa as a hypostasis (same god, with other name) of Sif. What is you point of view on that ?

Best regards Olivier, France.

I think I read somewhere that Snorri Sturlson thought of them as the same. But my understanding was that Jarnsaxa was a frost giantess and Sif was one of the Aesir goddesses. If they are the same then Thor's 3 children have the same mother. --Ksofen666 13:25 19 January 2007.

Stylistic Concern[edit]

Thor's name was spelled two different ways-- in standard English and non-standard English characters-- and Thrud and Odin were spelled only in non-standard characters. Whichever style is used, should be used consistently through the article, and as this is the English encyclopedia I think that standard English spellings should be used. Spelling "Th" with a Þ seems excessively pedantic and reader-unfriendly. I changed that and put the Norse spellings in parentheses for those who are curious. If someone feels strongly enough the other way and wants to change it, I won't have any heartburn, but I would suggest that the English spellings at least be mentioned in parentheses for the sake of readers who don't know what "Þórr" is. Sif location[edit]

Sif, SIF, and Sif (disambiguation) are three separate articles that would all be assigned the name of "Sif" independently. However only one can have the main page and I believe that it should be the TLA SIF, since the disambiguation can stay as Sif (disambiguation) and Sif can be moved to Sif (NorseMythology) or Sif (Norse mythology). Whichever article takes the page of Sif should also have SIF as a redirect so that there is no confusion when searching for either in the search bar. That is the main reason why I am proposing this move as it is very confusing to have two pages, "SIF" (TLA) and "Sif" (Norse God). -- Wiz9999 17:04, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Problem solved with SIF and Sif (disambiguation) merge into SIF (disambiguation) -- Wiz9999 20:20, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    Pass/Fail:
  • Also names like Thor, Odin etc. are alien to someone who not well-versed to Norse mytho. So write a breif description of the gods and goddesses e.g. Thor, the god of thunder.
  • Expand "Toponym" or merge with some other para. One line paras are discouraged in WP>

Thanks for taking a time to look at this! A few responses:
  1. There's no Eddic sources stating that Sif was a giantess - this seems to have been invented at some point in modern times and passed along - there's plenty of unfortunate examples of similar situations surrounding figures in Norse mythology. Probably confusion with Járnsaxa since they were both partners of Thor that produced children.
  2. It is never stated in the Eddas (our only source regarding Sif) that Sif is associated with grain. This is a theory put forth based off of the focus on her golden hair and her association with a personification of earth, which I've covered here to some extent.
  3. Sif is not the mother of Móði. It's Járnsaxa. This is a mistake by Lindow, unless he is somehow pushing a theory that Sif is Járnsaxa, which he doesn't mention on his entry regarding Járnsaxa in the same work. It's a sloppy mistake. With that said, some theories have been proposed regarding this that could potentially be mentioned here but they seem to usually amount to little but a dismissal.
  4. Magni's mother is never stated in surviving sources and there's no reason to assume it is either Sif or Járnsaxa.
Otherwise, I will gladly fix things per your request, though I am not sure where to put in that toponym. :bloodofox: (talk) 22:15, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Expand lead. Add:
    • Which books tell her story
    • mother of.....
    • accused of infidelity

--Redtigerxyz (talk) 12:43, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think I've changed things around and added some more information to clarify some things per request. Are page numbers really required? I think that would make a big mess of the references - can you show me where the policy is on this? I am still not sure what to do with that toponym. Are you sure we should remove those quotes? I think they're pretty important. We could convert them to prose but the big issue is that translations can make a massive difference in these areas, so I prefer to just state the translations up front when there's very little to be seen. :bloodofox: (talk) 20:02, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:CITE#Provide_page_numbers. Page numbers are really needed. Don't remove all quotes, the non-English one can be removed as translation is present. Try to minimize the quotes to 2. One of them can be written in prose instead of dialogue. Also, read WP:LEAD, lead is a summary of the article, so merging of characteristics is not the soln. IMO, keep characteristics seperate. Just summarize it, points given above.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 14:01, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Mention step-mother of Magni-modi. What about "goddess of fertility, and one of the Asynjur"?? in lead

--Redtigerxyz (talk) 14:10, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that no source text (neither of the Eddas) associates Sif with either of those figures at all, it simply states that they're sons of Thor. The goddess of fertility thing I've covered with the Davidson reference, it's not in the source texts either but a theory, as it is presented here. Sif is never mentioned in either Eddas as either Æsir or Vanir, unlike some of the other goddesses and this might be why she is sometimes instead listed as a "giant". However, this is never mentioned in the Eddas either. It could be just because people assume; either way I see nothing backing it and I think it's better to just leave it be unless some solid source pops up with theories surrounding it, at which point we should of course mention the source. I've added a few more page numbers to the references. Now, the other references I have not given page numbers for - we need page numbers for these? They're simply translations of two books and it would break some of them up that have been linked to multiple times as well. Which do you recommend being written in Prose instead - the longest? :bloodofox: (talk) 20:49, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Write one or both of them in prose, which ones entirely your choice. Page numbers are needed for translations too.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 13:30, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
One section has since been converted to prose. I'll work on the page numbers soon. :bloodofox: (talk) 22:37, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good job. Only problem now is the page numbers.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 10:48, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent. I believe I've just taken care of the page numbers. :bloodofox: (talk) 12:47, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Congrats. PASS.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 12:19, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Great! I'll apply these standards in the future as well. :bloodofox: (talk) 19:04, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
