From Mintguy's original article (User:Mintguy/Sandbox):

"Later attempts at banning the game in England (notably by Richard II in 1389, Henry IV in 1401, James II 1457 and Henry VIII in 1540)"

But James II was king of Scotland, not England. At a guess he tried to ban it in Scotland, but I won't put it in the article as I don't know. Bagpuss

I put a small note in the article, but from Googling it seems that "fut-ball" and "fute-ball" were used in Scotland well before Shakey wrote King Lear. It may be that historians have rejected these documents, but if not it's worth putting in. Bagpuss

Bagpuss, well done. I've got some more stuff following this period, but it's in rough form, and I'm going to be away for a few days. Mintguy

Yes. I dunno how James II slipped by me, it should go with Scotland of course. I wanted to find a proper citation for early references to the word "football" and Shakespeare was the earliest authoriative one I could find. One website claims "King James I of Scotland decreed in 1424 'that na manplay at the fute-ball, uder the paine of fiftie shillings'", but I'd like to find a proper citation. Mintguy

Ah, well, it's provisionally in the article for now. Should I remove it? Bagpuss

I'm going to merge this back into Football as people seem to be expanding the History section of that article rather than adding anything to this one.
