Latest Brighton article improvements

Hi! It's nice to see you back and keeping an eye on the Brighton article.

I'd like to tweak a couple of your changes today, but thought I'd run them by you first. It seems a shame to lose the fact that the Lanes do follow some of the street pattern of the original fishing settlement. (I'm presuming you haven't come up with anything that says that is a myth?) And I'd like to reinstate or replace some of the wording which mentioned the early settlement in that context.

And as for Atlingworth... interesting. I'm particularly interested cos my Brighton address is on Atlingworth Street. I have seen a map (I think it was a 1904 one, in an atlas of England, but I'll need to check) labelling the area as a Laine, so the Manor reference is not, perhaps, mutually exclusive. Does your source shed more detail on this? In the absense of a categorical disproof, I think a published map is good enough source material to justify putting the Laine reference back. Hi Kieran, sorry for the delay in responding. Been a bit busy. When I researched the Domesday entry for Brighton, I'm pretty certain I read about "Atlingworth" being in recongnition of one the ancient manors. However, I must admit I have no source to verify this with. Hmm. I'll try and find out in better detail. However, I'm pretty certain that the only laines were: Little Laine, Hilly Laine, West Laine and North Laine. Possibly East Laine. I think Little Laine was where sort of St James's Street is around. I'll research and get back to you. Although my bold outpouring of opinion of the Brighton talk page might not be followed up with much action from me at the moment. I'm trying to just work on Wikipedia once a week otherwise it'll take over my life! --Seaweed 16:14, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

I found the source I was after. In the Historical Atlas of Sussex(p.94), there is a map of Brighton parish c.1740 which has been prepared from some other sources. The area is divided into:

• "Town" (bounded by West Street, North Street, The Steine and the sea)
• West Laine (west of West Street up to Hove parish)
• North Laine (north of North Street up to Preston Parish)
• Hilly Laine (sort-of Islingword Road accross to Queens Park Road down to Edward Street)
• Little Laine (quite small, just east of the Steine to about Rock Gardens, and
• East Laine (beyond Little Laine to about Lewes Crescent and north to the Bristol Estate).

So no Atlingworth Laine I'm afraid. I'm still pretty certain Atlingworth originates regarding one of the ancient manors, but I'm still scratching my head on where I read that. --Seaweed 21:58, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

Whitehawk

I've added a full history of Whitehawk, as someone who has an interest in Brighton articles, I'd really appreciate it if you could do a proof read for me at some point. Feel free to correct anything that needs it. I am planning on expanding the Brighton Marina article as my next project. If your interested, I also put in an article on the legendary Peter Ward, found at Peter Ward (English footballer), although I desperately need a picture of him in Brighton kit that is eligible to be uploaded to wikipedia! Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. Brighton Racecourse

Dear Seaweed, I would like to understand why you have deleted so much of my text on this subject. There may have only been a few citations, but the material was all from the book I wrote about the history of the course and I saw no point in repeatedly citing the same source. There is no copyright issue as regards the similar text on the racecourse website; I wrote it for them using information from the book. Seaweed, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your recent contribution in adding internal link references to the Ryan Collinson article I created not too long ago. My forte is writing and most decidedly not technical expertise, which is typical of my generation. So I always appreciate any help I can get on that front.

I have no interest whatsoever in this particular subject. I’m not English. However, when I happened upon a video of Mr. Collinson reprising his Billy Elliot performance, I thought he was exceptionally good. When I saw that there was no Wikipedia article for him as yet, I finally saw my chance to actually create an article rather than simply editing articles as I have done often (usually to correct typos and grammatical errors). Since many other Billy Elliot performers had articles, I thought it appropriate, especially as he had the West End title/lead role. I liked the idea of creating an article about one so young; sort of getting in on the ground floor. I do think that with young Mr. Collinson’s tremendous talent and photogenic appearance that—assuming such is his desire—he has a real shot of making it big in entertainment one day. Therefore, I hope the humble article I created will grow over the years and that I might take a small measure of pride in the “anonymous notability” I might have achieved, perhaps similar to the feeling of whomever started the article on, for example, Taylor Swift and that the article will endure long after I’m gone!

Thanks again, Seaweed, and if you have more interest in British theater than I do, I hope you will keep tabs on the subject and perhaps consider adding substantive material as the subject’s professional resume hopefully blossoms with time! Columbus tower

Thank you seaweed for the update. I have a interest in buildings and construction, so try too add my bit :). It would be brilliant and very helpful if you could assist me with some help. I'm currently making a list of buildings over the height of 150 metres (skyscraper), it is called, List of cities by number of skyscrapers. It is situated on the page ,List of cities with the most skyscrapers. I have made a header titled, List of cities by number of skyscrapers. Then below it it I have constructed a table to list cities in order of how many skyscrapers they have. However for some reason the table I have constructed skips my header and lies below the next header. I wondered if you know why this happens and could possibly fix the problem.

I am delighted that this has been resolved. Thank you. I can now stop blundering about in a Wikipedia world I don’t understand and stop worrying about this article. It does feel as if a weight has been lifted from me - particularly with the offending accounts being blocked to prevent the possibility of any further issues - and I’m truly grateful for that. David Bangs article

Hello Seaweed, I have only known of him since December and have only met David once to buy one of his book. I have exchanged some emails so I could make the Wikipedia page. He has been influential in many policy decisions that have led to our Downs staying public (owned by the council). He was also well known for his murals in London. He appeared on the TV and the radio many times and hosted his own programme which was recommended in a number of national newspapers. He has been integral to campaign groups that have prevented many acres of Sussex Downland from being privatised, including much of the land around world famous Seven Sisters. David's page is intended as a stub article and people who know David and his achievements better will build on it. Hello there. I didn't know I was a member of the WikiProject Hip Hop! I've never heard of it! Anyway, I'll be glad to help you. You've done a good job in writing up a draft article and I praise you for your honesty in stating your professional connection to Elliot Grainge and not creating the page yourself. Incidentally I edited the article about Lucian Grainge recently. I've actually been spending editing quite a lot of music industry Wikpedia articles recently (I've even got print copy of July edition of Music Week in front of me!), so you're request is quite interesting. (I don't work in the music industry, I'm just a music fan.)

I think the starting thing about biographicaly articles is Notability. The question is whether Elliot Grainge is notable enough to justify a whole article about him. The first thing that I noticed was that there is no existing article for 10K Projects. Therefore it wouldn't make much sense to create an article for Elliot before creating one for 10K Projects. Therefore the next question is whether 10K Projects is itself is "notable". If it is, it might be more efficient (to start with anyway) to include information about Elliot Grainge in a 10K Projects article. In due course, maybe Elliot would get his own article, if notable enough.

I've actually never heard of 10K Projects until today, but my very quick two minute scan of your draft article and the artists connected to 10K Projects makes me think it probably should have its own article. 10K Projects seems quite notable to me. I might actually go ahead a create that article, but I'll need to do some more research first. Maybe I'll then include some of the content from your draft article for Eliot Grainge into that article. Hello Beccaynr. I think that's very unfair of you to give ma an unconstructive edit template about Ash Sarkar. All I've been doing is trying to improve the readability of the article and make it more encyclopedic. In fact, that's pretty much all I do on Wikipedia these days: just trying to simplify articles to help the casual reader. I don't even remember how I ended up on that article. I very rarely delete references, so left all that intact. I've been editing Wikipedia since 2005 I think, so do have some idea about policies and guidelines. It's not always necessary to have discussions on talk pages and topics where there isn't anything that contentious going on. I didn't notice any big debates going on the Talk page, with no edits since August 2022. If anything, I could argue that maybe you should have talked to me first, before assuming bad faith, but I don't mind really. It's sunny outside and it's only Wikipedia. Funnily enough, sometimes when I remove excessive details/quotes from a biographical artcile, I challenge myself to go a find a new reference about that person that isn't in the article already. I feel that's me trying to help Wikipedia by not just being someone who removes thing, but adds things too. I'm going to see if I can find something new and notable abour Ash Sarkar right now! I must admit this ongoing controversy is not something I've been paying much attention to, but as you say there is a lot of detail in that other page. I think a lot of editors, quite naturally I suppose, add references as these news stories develop. Then the articles end up too long. Please don't depopulate categories for no reason

There are plenty of categories on this encyclopedia with one or two pages in them. You can think they're not necessary, but that's not a valid reason to depopulate a totally normal category. Noah Kahan already has two albums with articles and it looks like his career is only really just taking off, so there's reason to believe it will continue and he will make more. Your edits have been reverted; please don't restore the removals per WP:BRD. If you really have such an issue with the category existing (and I don't know why you do), then nominate it for deletion.
