First of all, as far as anyone can tell, systematic infanticide doesn't occur in China. There is a problem in some areas with sex selective abortions and abandonment of female infants, but hospitals and orphanages will generally accept infants no questions asked specifically to prevent infanticide.

Second of all, the information that the bride's family is expected to provide home and shelter in China is just wrong.

In some countries, custom dictates the bride's family should provide home and basic necessities to start a family as a gift to the groom. Furthermore, the bride leaves her family to live with her husband. As a result, in these countries, as in other countries with similar customs where a very large percentage of the population are peasants, having girls does not provide any return on the investment of feeding, clothing and raising the child. Boys on the contrary assure many years of labour in the family and eventually inherit the land while providing for the elderly. Consequently, some families proceed to drowning newborn girls, abandoning them, or selectively aborting female fetuses. These practices have led to an uneven sex distribution as millions of men now find themselves without a possible bride.
