Herbivorous fish??[edit]

Is herbivore the right word to describe reef fish? They don't eat herbs (=herbaceous plants), but algae, so might be referred to more accurately as algivores. Plantsurfer 14:29, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

In typical use, "herbivore" is a very general term, describing animals which eat parts of plants. An algivore is often an animal or protist that consumes entire individual algal cells and is therefore, strictly speaking, a predator. In similar fashion, the terms seed and seedling predator describe animals that consume entire individual plants. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hank.stevens (talkcontribs) 21:56, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Quite often, algivores and seed and seedling predators are considered types of herbivores Hank.stevens (talk) 22:03, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Zero mention of humans being herbivores?[edit]

Why is there no mention of humans being herbivores in this article? In the about section it says:

"This article is about anatomically and physiologically adapted diets to plants."

Humans are animals which are anatomically and physiologically adapted to a plant-based diet. We are a primarily frugivorous great ape. When considering what's appropriate for this page one should not consider what people are actually eating based on culture, but the actual physiology and anatomy of an animal.

Even Carl Linnaeus, the legendary biologist who is known as the father of the modern taxonomic system, had this to say on the matter:

«To say that humans have the anatomical structure of an omnivore is an egregiously inaccurate statement. Man's structure, internal and external compared with that of the other animals, shows that fruit and succulent vegetables are his natural food.» — Preceding unsigned comment added by IrretrievablyLost (talkcontribs) 22:59, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"A number of popular myths about vegetarianism sprung with no scientific basis. One example of such a myth is that man is naturally a vegetarian. And the rationale is that the human body resembles plant-eaters and not carnivores. But as a matter of fact, humans are omnivores. We may eat meat or plant foods. Anatomist and primatologist and a vegetarian and a Scientific Advisor to The American Anti-Vivisection Society, Dr. McArdle, debunk the theory of man being only a plant-eater." - https://www.biologyonline.com/articles/humans-omnivores - Stefantalpalaru (talk) 17:46, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
