use of the term Syrmia in modern-day administrative subdivision names[edit]

In January 2006‎ the article "Srem/Srijem" was moved to "Syrmia" (no summary message). In April 2006‎, the article "Vukovar-Srijem County" was moved to "Vukovar-Syrmia County" (summary: Correct name in english. Srijem = Syrmia (German: Syrmien)). The "Srem District" article went like this:

  • 22 July 2008‎ Kamarad Walter (talk | contribs | block)‎ m . . (3,311 bytes) (0)‎ . . (moved Srem District to Syrmia District: Anglifying. Per Vukovar-Syrmia County.
  • 23 July 2009‎ FMasic moved Syrmia District to Srem District over redirect: It is based on the Serbian (as it is in Serbia), and Syrmia isn't an official title.
  • 17 October 2009‎ Biruitorul moved Srem District to Syrmia District over redirect: did you think what to do with the categories?
  • 16 December 2012‎ Nado158 moved page Syrmia District to Srem District over redirect (no summary message)
  • 23 June 2014‎ IvanOS moved page Srem District to Syrmia District over redirect: English name.
  • 27 June 2014‎ Anastan moved page Syrmia District to Srem District over redirect: Original article name, you should ask other about it. Use rename procces

A Google Books search for the anglicized names of the administrative divisions turns up practically nothing. I'm thinking we need to decide if the consensus is to revert to the specific names in the case of the administrative divisions, and then apply that to both. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 19:30, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

All articels should have same name. Does anyone know what is English common name? In Serbian language, it should be Srem, as per Serbia constitution. But is the Englsih name also that, or its not that but it is Syrmia? I dont know, i am for serbian, as its in Serbia, so that should be as nothing else is searched. --Ąnαșταη (ταlκ) 22:58, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see the problem here. English term for region Srijem (in Croatian) or Srem (in Serbian) is Syrmia. Considering this is Wikipedia on English language, for administrative divisions we should use English words. Please, without double standards! If on article about Vukovar-Syrmia County we use English term, why not to do same for Syrmia District? --IvanOS 13:13, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We should use English if we can source it. I don't currently see we can source either of those terms. If "Syrmia" was actually a common English word, there would be no debate, but it's really just another relatively obscure toponym. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 15:45, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose Syrmia was an attempt at solution of "Srem vs. Srijem" problem, but I think it was a bad one. The region is relatively obscure for the English speakers, and hardly anyone uses the latinized name except maybe in historical contexts; latinized toponyms have been falling out of fashion for at least a century. According to the old Murphy's "if it's worth doing, then it's worth overdoing" , the Wikipedian "consistency" madness then took on and renamed everything in sight, creating a lot of quite artificial names around, as if a reader could plausibly get confused with Srem/Srijem/Syrmia terminology. The end result looks rather silly.
My proposal is: use local names (Srem/Srijem) consistently for all appropriate articles, including the article text. In that way, they wouldn't grate ears of anyone even broadly familiar with the area, like "Syrmia" does. The main article may be left at "Syrmia" for the sake of peace and harmony, although I don't have an issue with it being moved to either variant. No such user (talk) 08:30, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The modern Croatian county article, and it's dependencies, are now moved to the verifiable title. I've left the term Syrmia alone here and at Syrmia County (former), it seems vaguely appropriate for historic articles with no clear modern-day national designation to use the compromise. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 13:55, 9 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
