Briley's first term was four years, his second five. This was the result of a special one-time provsion in the Metropolitan Charter to get the Metro elections (mayor and Metropolitan Council) out of the cycle of other elections and put them in " off years"; the second set of terms (1966-1971) was for five years as a result. This means that, barring futher charter revision, Briley will have served as mayor longer than anyone else can, 13 years. There is considerable discussion about whether the charter provisions establishing term limits for council members adopted later and limiting them to two consecutive terms apply to mayors as well, it is unknown whether Mayor Purcell will have any interest in challengning this. This is a good stub; I hope that it leads to something great; Briley defnitely was "notable" and deserving of a page regardless of one's personal opinion of him. Rlquall 22:05, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Was the 1962 runoff against West, or Clifford Allen? I know the 1966 runoff was against West as I remember it, I remember Metro coming in but was a little young to try to understand politics in 1962. Rlquall 22:07, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)
