I am the "editor" of a similar Wiki which I developed independently of Wikipedia: http://mathis.heydtmann.de/WikiLiver.

I have a strong interest in hepatology and teaching and the WikiLiver can be used like the Wikipedia as a liver specific encyclopedia but I also use it (with success) as presentation tool. As a consequence the pages (articles) are shorter and more structured.

I have seen that the Wikipedia is probably slower than it should be. I would have thought that decentralizing the Wiki with links accross the wikis would make things faster. I would be happy to offer some server space for that if needed...
