Rewrite[edit]

I've rewritten this page - with about 6 years experience as a Stratus sysadmin, I hope it's more informative and better structured now. If there are any subject topics which I've missed, pls leave a note here as I'll be checking back periodically.

The input is welcome - I'm sure that someone will sort out the style :-) Sittingduck123 11:39, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FTX[edit]

This sentence is structured in such a way to imply that its points to an operating system's article. If you follow the link, you will realise that FTX is not an operating system. Obviously something is wrong. "Stratus later introduced a Unix-compatible operating system called FTX."

===FTX is a UNIX-derived OS which does not seem to be available anymore in the Stratus product lineup. According to the comp.sys.stratus FAQ <QUOTE> On the Unix side of the house, a frequent question is, "How different is FTX from other versions of Unix?" I'm not an FTX expert, but the short answer is that FTX is derived from the AT&T System V Release 4 code, with some kernel modifications and a few enhanced features, such as symmetric multiprocessing. From the user's point of view, it should perform like any well behaved Unix, unless you ask it to do something Berkelish. (In general, in the Unix world, BSD releases are increasingly eclipsed by SVR4-flavor variants, which include Solaris 2.x, IRIX, and HP/UX. Even Linux is more like SVR4 than BSD.) </QUOTE>

Layout[edit]

The article could use a few subsections -- I can't see good places to put them though, without having two page sections.

The following topics deserve discussion:

  • Terminal handling (the very cooked input, cooked output, "--PAUSE--")
  • Applications for VOS (Samba, Gnu tools and Perl deserve mention)
  • Link to http://ftp.stratus.com/ (and maybe http://www.stratus.com/ ... maybe)
  • Portability (s$, e$, compiler extensions) and interoperability (FTP server funnies)
  • Screen shot of form completion ...

The following topics deserve discussion:

  • Performance (is this system slow, or is it just me)
  • What is it typically used for?

Sections[edit]

Sections now exist - pls feel free to input anything relevant that I haven't. I haven't used POSIX.1 applications (which include Samba, Gnu tools & Perl) so I'm not writing anything about them. Performance depends on a LOT of factors, check http://www.banbottlenecks.com for white papers on improving throughput. I know that I've experienced truly awesome throughput on a Continuum 1200.

August 2011[edit]

I've updated some stale links and added references to OpenVOS. I also updated the POSIX / open-source information and the list of open-source products. More work remains.

April 2015[edit]

The Stratus VOS article should not be deleted. There are six mainframe manufacturers on Earth. Only Stratus mainframes are fully lockstepped, and Stratus mainframes run VOS. There are hundreds of companies using VOS around the world. Though the usage of VOS may be invisible to most people, it is significant. Also, VOS is the only extant descendant of Multics that I know of. DonaldET3 (talk) 17:56, 28 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the notability box, I had the same impression. Unfortunately there are a lot of editors who see fit to roam around subjects which they are unfamiliar deleting them or cajoling in that direction. Hopefully, this article should survive. prat (talk) 01:34, 7 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
