Time to move rover to the non existent category?

Merge from List of cars built in the UK[edit]

I propose that we merge the unique content of List of cars built in the UK into this article. Does anyone have any strong opinions, or reasons not to? -- de Facto (talk). 10:38, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agree, lists have a tendency to be unsightly and insofar as the data from List of cars built in the UK can be transposed into the table in British motor industry it should be done. As a resource the latter page is of more use to users Dick G 18:36, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think the following is current. I'm a bit short of references though:
  • Daimler, as part of Jaguar, is no longer in Coventry. [They were in Radford, Coventry until Limo & V12 engine stopped in 1992. Production then went to Browns Lane, Coventry. They're still designed & developed in Whitley, Coventry] LewisR 21:47, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think the Daimler Super 8 is still in production.
  • Don't know about the Movano.
  • The Morgan Plus 8 is not mentioned on the Morgan web site so I assume is no longer made.
  • The last Almera was made at Sunderland in Nov 2006. [1]
  • The Noble M15 is current and so is (I think) the M400. [Aren't Nobles built in South Africa?] LewisR 21:47, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Automotive Technik - they were still around in late 2006 so I think they are still going.
  • Clew Motorcycles- no idea.
  • East Lancashire Coachbuilders are still operating in Blackburn
  • ERF were taken over by MAN who used the Middlewich location to win a British Army order and then promptly shut the factory and moved production to Austria!!!!
  • Seddon Atkinson are no more. [2]
  • Wrightbus are still in Ballymena and have just won a big school bus order. top item
  • Triumph motor cycles are still at Hinckley

The list of "Cars which used to be made in the UK" is so incomplete as to be useless and if complete would run to several thousand entries. I say delete it or refer to the Category:Defunct motor vehicle manufacturers of the United Kingdom.

Component Manufacture[edit]

Bridgend, Wales is a huge engine plant for Ford, Jaguar and Land Rover. Hams Hall, Birmingham makes 4 cylinder engines for Mini & BMW. Should these be incorporated into the article as they employ around 1500 people each. LewisR 21:55, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

History[edit]

Shouldn't the history continue beyond 1955? The contrast between then and now would be interesting. Currently it looks more like a nostalgia trip. (Ajkgordon 16:01, 21 February 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Number of makers in the 1920s[edit]

I have long been suspicious of the numbers given for the companies making cars in 1922 and 1929 although it is quoted "The Motor Men" but where the author got it from is not stated. So, I have been through Nick Baldwin's A-Z of Cars of the 1920s and counted them up. In 1922 there were 183 active British companies plus several other "foreign" assembly plants. By 1929 58 were trading, not necessarily all of these had existed in 1922. Several other companies came and went in the meantime. The figures are still not absolutely conclusive as there is doubt if, for example, a hopeful post WWI start up was still actually making cars in 1922 or was bankrupt stock being sold off. Similar cases exist for the late 1920s too. There is also the problem of defining British. Vauxhall, for example started the decade as British and ended it as part of GM (I included Vauxhall by the way, but not Citroen, Chevrolet or Chrysler. An accurate figure is probably impossible but I think mine is closer than the previous one. -- Malcolma (talk) 17:41, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming[edit]

I propose renaming this article "Automobile industry in the United Kingdom". This would be consistent with other automobile industry by country articles (eg. Automobile industry in Germany). --Hartz (talk) 09:43, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Toyota in Deeside[edit]

It says that on the BBC news website and on cefax that Toyota are planning cutbacks at it's factory in Deeside, North Wales but this article does not mention this plant in it's current motor vehicle production plants section. History section labels[edit]

I think the labels which were removed here were actually quite informative. I'm not an expert on the subject, so I cannot judge whether they are completely neutral. But they are obviously a lot better for the reader than simple year intervals. It would be nice to hear arguments why the labels were not neutral enough. Labels such as 'Meltdown', 'Mixed fortunes', 'Foreign influence' and 'World dominance' are in my view highly simplistic, subjective and misleading. They provide a nice 'narrative' which even a child can follow, but a false one. Is 'Range Rover' a brand?[edit]

I've noticed that 'Range Rover' keeps getting added to, then removed from, the list of British brands/marques. What exactly is a brand or marque, and is 'Range Rover' one, or not? I think we need a consensus on this. -- de Facto (talk). 13:16, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In my understanding, an automotive marque is one which is not a sub brand of any other brand. All Range Rovers are also Land Rovers, and Range Rover is effectively a sub-brand similar to BMW's 'M' brand, Audi's 'S' brand or Citroen's 'DS'. This is distinct from say SEAT, Bentley and Skoda, which are never also Volkswagens. Rangoon11 (talk) 13:34, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

History[edit]

Should there be something on the history about the UK is the origin of the left hand drive rule and maybe a link to the article Right- and left-hand traffic. Also, local and foreign manufacturers in the UK produces car with the indicator stalk on the left for the domestic RHD market. Search of consensus, forced with subjective estimates and complaints on English only ("better before", "messy", "low quality", "bad changes", "badly written", etc) remarks only in frienly ([3], [4]) total reverts including of dewikification and removing last figures, illustrations even, without deal arguments already asked in discussion [5].
The obsolete 2008 data only about output and 12th-largest place in the beginning no must keep more because it harmfully disinform wikireaders and reduces value of Wiki while a significantly newer cited data available.
In order to view what seeming doubtful info wishing be confirmed (if this no verifiable under links and/or other articles indeed), please uses no info's hiding total reverts, but Source template. But in this cases it's no need because all contributed data (icl. for last figures, international awards, illustrations) from OICA, * Cars of year, etc verifiable and presents just in same article below or/and in appropriate List of countries by motor vehicle production and other revealed linked articles.

Information on Wikipedia needs to be properly sourced - and those sources should be presented in the article inline with the information contributed. We should not have to correct your English. If this is not your native language, then perhaps you would be more suited to contributing to a different WIkipedia, as you have already done on the russian language Wikipedia - but understand that the rules about edit warring, and proper sourcing apply to the other language projects. --Biker Biker (talk) 09:34, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please, give the example in absolutely unacceptable and incomprehensible my English phrase that no uses somewhere in Wiki. Is Wiki must be absolute Oxford's etc standard of English? Is it so hard for you to slightly correct if you counts itself as useful for deal of Wiki in obvious cases like annual figures updates?
Don't bring to absurd. Just each word or phrase must be sourced inline even if some below of high links in the same article provides citing? Is it really so in all text of this and all other articles? Again, what about Source template exists if absolute doubtless for any info must be in Wiki only ostensibly? You are trying to make all manner of changes to this article - the removal and addition of multiple images, large scale changes to the (stable and already pretty decent) lead including the addition of uncited material, the addition of a considerable amount of very badly written English etc.

Police intervention in 1895[edit]

Its my understanding, (which may be wrong) that in June 1895 this driver was breaking the law and so it is significant that, in the event, there was no police intervention which is why it was mentioned. Am I wrong? Is the source (supplied) wrong? Eddaido (talk) 22:52, 7 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
