Dialogue on Palmdale info box[edit]

On writing Lancaster's history: hopefully you've got the 1876 SP RR train stop and the 1884 M. L. Wicks LA Herald newspaper lot promotion covered. Western Hotel (oldest extant building), LA County administrative building @ Lan Blvd & Cedar Ave, Marion Morrison (John Wayne), Frances Gumm (Judy Garland), Carl Bergstrom, Barbara Little, Art and Grace Pickus, Antelope Al, AV Fair, Whit Carter & Lancaster Radio, Methodist Church ice cream social, Catholic Church BBQ, the establishment of Edwards AFB, AV College new 1960 campus, Stanley Kleiner, failed incorporation attempts, Palmdale's feared enroachment, 1977 incorporation, and modern growth in your writeup. If not, of course I'll add where it's useful after you post your edit.

Lancaster[edit]

Firstly, don't cut and paste moves as this destroys the page history. Rather use the move button on the left, when you're logged in.

Lancaster, like many other cities in England has precedence over other. There are reasons for this; firstly Americans refer to towns as Lancaster, California or Foo, Bar rather than simply Lancaster. Secondly, Lancaster is reasonably large city, and has historical importance. Thirdly, you appear to be biased towards your own Lancaster.

Other places which have precedence over include (off the top of my head): Aberdeen, Andover, Bath, Bedford, Belfast, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Blackburn, Burnley, Buckingham, Cardiff, Carlisle, Canterbury, Cambridge, Chester, Chesterfield, Coventry, Derby, Dorchester, Dover, Durham, Exeter, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Gloucester, Hereford, Ipswich, Leeds, Leicester, London, Lincoln, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Newport, Northampton, Norwich, Nottingham, Oxford, Portsmouth, Preston, Plymouth, Sheffield, Southampton, Swansea, Taunton, Truro, Worcester, York ...

The exceptions are Boston (which is a town in Lincolnshire, but redirects to Boston, MA), Washington (another town in Lincolnshire but redirects to the State) and Perth (which dabs the original and the capital of Western Australia.) If you still are not happy, discuss it at WP:RM. Dunc| 14:23, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

1. Sorry about the page history. It can still be found by looking under the original name.

2. Original doesn't always garnish precedence. Apple Valley, California is an example of this. Lancaster, Pennsylvania has more historical importance than the English city, look it up. Lancaster California is larger than the English, Pennsylvania, and Ohio cities combined. And NO, Americans don't refer to their cities with "city, state" designation. Foreigners do. If you were in Las Vegas and said that you were going to go to Lancaster this weekend, England is probably the last place they'd think of. They'd think of Pennsylvania or California first. Then Ohio. Your probably have to mention England before they'd get it.

3. If I was biased to my own Lancaster, I would have put the primary listing as the California city and placed a redirect to the disambiguation on its page. --Anon 00:56, Apr 21, 2005 (UTC)

Don't do copy and paste moves. That is considered vandalism. If you have a problem go and list it on WP:RM. Otherwise, don't do copy-and paste moves, it destroys the page history (and if you do it again, I will protect the page). The page history is an important part of the GFDL. We have had issues like this before, see talk:Ipswich. Be bold, but follow the rules, and the naming conventions. Dunc| 12:16, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I agree that moving should be done by "Move this page" rather than by cut-and-paste. I've posted a comment at Talk:Lancaster (disambiguation) as to why I think "Lancaster" should take the reader to the dab page. I'm not an admin, though, and, even if I were, admins aren't supposed to exercise their protection power for the purpose of freezing a particular preferred version of an article where there's a good-faith content dispute. My sketchy impression from the talk page was that there's not a majority in favor of the move (a recent move, from what you tell me) that changed Lancaster to an article about the English city. (I don't think this change was done pursuant to any discussion on WP:RM.) If discussion on the talk page doesn't produce a consensus, however, then the next step would be to WP:RM or WP:RfC. JamesMLane 04:56, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Just a final followup, thanks for tagging the image. I assume you took the picture, so can you change the template to {{GFDL-self}}. Sorry, that was my bad last time. This way, we have a source and an copyright tag. Burgundavia 20:24, Apr 20, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Surprise_Stadium.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. Thanks for uploading Image:Surprise city logo-2.JPG. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Thanks for uploading Image:Surprise city logo-2.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. Image source problem with Image:Bakersfield City Logo.gif[edit]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

This is an automated message from a robot. You have recently uploaded Image:Bakersfield City Logo.gif. The file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 11:22, 12 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If you believe you received this message in error, please notify the bot's owner.
