Present holder of Earl of Wessex follow Prince Edward becoming Duke of Edinburgh[edit]

The present holder of the title remains Prince Edward who is now the Duke of Edinburgh. His son, James, who has since birth been known as Viscount Severn will know be known as James, Earl of Wessex. In both cases, Viscount Severn and Earl of Wessex are courtesy titles for James. His father, Prince Edward remains the holder of the title. 2.96.46.87 (talk) 15:20, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Subsidiary Titles[edit]

Only Viscount Severn is a subsidiary Earldom of Wessex. The Earldom of Forfar is of the same rank so cannot be subsidiary, by definition. 2.96.46.87 (talk) 22:59, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies for reverting your edits earlier, you're correct Earl of Forfar is not subsidiary. Although, titles of the same rank can still be subsidiary titles. An example is the dukedom of Wellington where dukedoms and a princely title are subsidiary titles of Duke of Wellington. DDMS123 (talk) 23:31, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I just realised that these two earldoms are similar to the dukedoms of Cornwall and Rothesay where Cornwall is used in England and Rothesay is used in Scotland. In this situation, Wessex is used in England and Forfar is used in Scotland. DDMS123 (talk) 23:37, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
